Australians around the country gathered on Saturday, and observed a minute's silence at 11am, to commemorate Remembrance Day — honouring those who died serving in conflicts and peace-keeping operations.
This year's Remembrance Day marked the 105-year anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I in 1918.
The national Remembrance Day service was held at the Australian War Memorial in Canberra, which more than 1,000 people attended.
The anniversary has evolved since it was first marked by allied countries after World War I, in which more than 60,000 Australians lost their lives.
November 11 is now observed around the world as a day to remember the sacrifice that countless of people have made in service to their country.
Red Flanders poppies — named for the John McCrae poem In Flanders Fields — feature prominently, with many wearing one on their left side to symbolise remembrance, or laying one at a memorial in tribute.
The Sydney Opera House was projected with Flanders Poppies at the dawn of Remembrance Day service, and will be again at dusk.
Loading...Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was attended the national Remembrance Day service at the Australian War Memorial on Saturday morning, and laid a floral wreath in tribute.
During the service Worimi man Corporal Tarron Roach played didgeridoo in front of the Stone of Remembrance.
Returned and Services League of Australia national president Greg Melick then read The Ode, from the poem For the Fallen by Laurance Binyon.
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.
The reading was followed by the Last Post on bugle, then the minute's silence at 11am, which was observed around the country.
Australian Defence Force chief of personnel Lieutenant General Natasha Fox gave the commemorative address at the end of the minute's silence, and said the act of remembrance is a reminder of the human suffering at war.
"The act of commemoration is a poignant reminder that despite its ever-changing character, war ultimately remains a human endeavour, and it is people who suffer from war" Lieutenant General Fox said.
"We have borne witness to this across the globe over the many years since 1918."
Remembrance Day was marked throughout central Melbourne, including outside Flinders Street Station and Bourke Street Mall.
Pedestrians stopped on street corners and police halted traffic to observe a minute's silence while buglers played.
A few of kilometres down the road at Melbourne's Shrine of Remembrance, Governor of Victoria Margaret Gardner told crowds much had changed since in the state and across Australia since the first Armistice Day was observed in 1919.
"As Victoria grows and changes, it's more important than ever that we reflect on and learn from the lessons of the past," she said.
At Flemington Racecourse, Stakes Day came to a stop with guests being asked to "remember those who died in the pursuit of peace and freedom".
The usually bustling streets of Sydney fell silent as the sounds of the last post echoed through the city at 11am.
A crowd of at least 400 gathered at Martin Place, most people sporting red poppies pinned to their shirts.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns and Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek were among the many notable figures in attendance.
Several wreaths were laid at the Sydney Cenotaph to honour Australia's fallen servicepeople.
From major cities to tiny towns, tens of thousands of Queenslanders gathered to pause and pay tribute to those who fought and fell for Australia.
Gloomy skies across Brisbane's CBD did little to deter those who lined up for the Remembrance Day parade led by World War Two veterans.
Young and old, hundreds stood in silence to show their appreciation for the fallen.
Many were moved by tales of bravery, courage and camaraderie forged in battle.
In Adelaide, current and former defence force personnel paid their respects at South Australia's National War Memorial on North Terrace.
South Australia's Governor Frances Adamson and Premier Peter Malinauskas attended the ceremony.
A separate ceremony was held at the West Terrace Cemetery in the city that acknowledged the 50th anniversary of the end of Australia's role in the Vietnam War.
A group of World War II veterans attended the cemetery – nestled in Adelaide's parklands – which is home to hundreds of fallen soldiers.
RSL South Australia Ambassador Bill Denny said the presence of World War II veterans at the Vietnam ceremony was significant.
"We've got men and women in the army, navy and air force and the Australian Women's Army service," he said.
"They range in age from 98 to 105 and they're making an effort at an extraordinary time in their lives to come out and acknowledge the service of Vietnam veterans."
