City officials have yet to approve operating and lease agreements with the passenger rail service that would commence twice-daily service connecting Mobile with New Orleans with stops on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. The Mobile City Council's Economic, Cultural & Civic Development Development Committee met on Tuesday to discuss the status of Amtrak in the Port City. A total of 1,608 degrees were conferred during the celebrations at the Cajundome and Convention Center. Among the degrees conferred, 1,249 bachelor’s degrees were granted alongside 319 master’s degrees, 38 doctoral degrees, and both a graduate and undergraduate certificate. Pointe Coupee 05/25/24 (Note: This article was updated with new information from the original article which appeared on PCR on May 27, 2019.) It was 80 years ago this year that one of the many somber moments in World War II history that played out for family after family worldwide, hit close to home in Pointe Coupee and Memphis, Tennessee. On January 13, 1944, 2nd Lt. Jefferson Caleb (Jeff C.) Hornsby, a 22-year-old Pointe Coupee native, perished during a U.S. Army Air Corps training mission off the coast of Puerto Rico. Lt. Hornsby had earned his wings three months prior in October 1943. In 2007, a confidential investigative report of the accident was declassified by the U.S. government and released to Hornsby's family by the Aviation Archaeological Investigation and Research Center. According to the report, Lt. Hornsby’s B-25 G aircraft entered an uncontrollable spin at 7,000 feet, crashing into the sea. (MORE) |

Jeff Landry signed a bill into law this week shuttering the camera program on the congested, sometimes crash-prone Interstate 10 crossing. It is the third-longest bridge in the U.S. The new law also ends the doubled fines for motorists caught speeding on the 18-mile crossing. (MORE) |
