Help me understand season 8 (spoiler warning)

So, I finally got around to watch season 6-8. I absolutely loved homeland when it first aired but due to a number of reasons never got past Germany (having kids, where the Quinn storyline was headed among some).

I have scrolled through some of the episode discussion threads and agree with the general consensus that the show ended well.

However, I have a problem with the fundamental storyline of season 8 and I haven't seen it discussed yet.

I simply don't buy the idea that Russia would drive the world into a nuclear war in order to find the spy. Russia is alot closer to Pakistan than the US and a nuclear war would affect them tremendously. All Carrie would have to do was call their bluff and wait them out.

What am I missing? I feel like they were playing a high risk game that they would never have gone through with.

Actually it wasn't Russia that was going to drive the world into a nuclear war but a warmonger camouflaging himself as a consultant of the president of the United States of America.

So I wondered why the Russian government kept its promise to Yevgeny Gromov + Carrie to tell the world about the content of the recording after fulfilling their demand.
