Chris McDaniel criticizes GOP for ‘sliding to the left’ at MS primary election party
Hours before learning he’d lost the Mississippi Republican primary election in the lieutenant governor’s race, State Sen. Chris McDaniel spoke to supporters and the media at his watch party in Biloxi.
Surrounded by lights and cameras at the Biloxi Visitors Center, McDaniel acknowledged incumbent Delbert Hosemann had outraised him six-to-one before Tuesday’s primary.
While he didn’t concede to Hosemann at the time he spoke to the press, McDaniel — who is from Jones County — said he was “at peace” with the future outcome of the race.
Hosemann had garnered almost 52% of the vote to McDaniel’s 49% by 1 a.m. Wednesday, according to the New York Times, who called the race just before midnight Tuesday.
Hosemann defeated McDaniel in Hancock, Harrison and Jackson counties.
In his remarks, McDaniel criticized the other Republican members of the statehouse, saying they are “compromising their principles” and “sliding to the left.”
McDaniel, who currently serves in the Mississippi State Senate, will no longer be in office after this loss.
“I’ve always tried my very best to live up to my standards. When I was elected in Jones County I fought for conservatism and I’ve been unyielding in fighting for those principals. I’d rather lose retaining those principals than to win neglecting or sacrificing those principals,” McDaniel said.
