Quartiere: Midtown

It was a bucket list activity for us (as huge fans of the show) that I most certainly recommend. We attended the dress rehearsal and got to see skits that didn’t even make it into the Final Cut. Also, the dress is earlier, so we were done by 10pm. Loved the Peacock waiting room vibe, and there’s not a bad seat in the house for the live performance.

Gosh, I haven’t watched Saturday Night Live in a long time I’m a 6070s cable Saturday Night Live was the best thing on television I just saw a kit I’m sorry I just saw a skit at four people sitting around the table. It was called the sandwich guy and the sandwich guy comes into the room and they ordered pizza and didn’t use the sandwich guy anymore, I don’t know but this was like one of the most horrible skits I ever saw on Saturday night live and if they’re all like that wow I can’t believe anyone actually wrote that and put it on TV who bring back the 70s 😞😞😞😞

Going to a taping of Saturday Night Live has been at the top of my bucket list ever since moving to New York, and it was everything I hoped it would be! Skits and sketches from some of the top comedians and performers, laughing with friends until we could barely breathe. The staff, hosts, and pages were incredibly friendly and welcoming, and it was so special to see the cast I’ve been watching on television for a long time.

We got really lucky to win the ticket lottery from August for this show. We showed up an hour before the latest arrival time and the line was already 15-20 deep with ticket holders. Got in quick around that time so don’t recommend showing up later. Then you sit in a waiting room waiting to be called. When called you head to the 9th floor to be seated. We got really lucky and got a last minute upgrade where we were pulled from the line as we entered the studio. We were led to the 8th floor where we got floor seats. We counted about 30 total seats on the floor. The show was amazing, the people were great to us and we would recommend it as a must do activity if you win the lottery in August and can make the trip to NYC. It was awesome!

First off, my husband and I were already big fans of the show before we even won the tickets. Seeing the show live, however, was incredible! If you ever have the chance to see this performance in-person, do it! We saw many celebrities that night, both inside the studio and walking in the hallways. It was just so neat to see all that goes into making the show, too. Keep in mind, you cannot BUY tickets to this show. You can only get tickets by winning them online.

As mentioned there are three ways to get into the show, my way has always been standby line. I've had the joy of going to shows for over 15 years now and the next show I do will be my 30th. I have found its important to come overly prepared since you will be our there for awhile and while a good amount of standbys have gotten into almost every show I've done (I'm currently at 90% success rate) you do have to do a lot of waiting. I can't speak highly enough of kindness of most people I've met in line, given the randomness of who you'll be next to for hours in line, I'm consistently impressed with hospitality for one another. Same goes with my experience in the evening with the pages...I can recount three personal experiences where they helped me out greatly. While standby has NO guarantee of getting in, I'd take the chances I've experienced over sending in for lottery tickets every year.
Also be prepared that your group might get split up in seats in the studio. Also the cast is really freindly too and if you wait outside after the show, some of them will chat up for a bit and happily take photos. It's at least worth the once in a lifetime experience.

I attended the dress rehearsal for the Bill Hader hosted March 17 episode of SNL. There are 3 ways to get SNL tickets;

1. Know someone who works for the show.
2. Win the SNL lottery (high odds and entries can only be submitted in August).
3. The standby line (my only option)

Tickets for the standby line are handed out on Saturday at 7am, on the 48th Street side of Rockefeller Center. You can either opt for the dress rehearsal or live show. The dress rehearsal has more sketches and tends to be more relaxed and interactive. The live show is the real thing and has a unique atmosphere. Dress runs from 8-10pm, and live from 11:30pm-1am.

I got in line around 12pm on the Friday, and had the choice of either number 13 for dress or 20 for live. Camping out over-night was definitely a unique experience and not something for the casual fan or those with limited time. In hindsight, I would have been fine joining the line on Friday evening, but I wanted to limit the risk of not being successful. Generally speaking, your chances are good if you’re within the first 100 in line.

Admittance from the standby line can be anywhere between 0 to 80 people for each show. The size of the line and what time to join can fluctuate massively depending on the weather and the popularity of the host and musical guest. Some people have been known to get in by only waiting a couple of hours in line. You’re given a ticket with your name on it (bring photo ID) and have to return to the NBC store inside Rockefeller Center later that evening. You won’t know if you’re successful until you’ve actually been seated, so it’s a massive gamble.

Admittedly, I didn’t have the best seats, so my view was limited for some sketches. However, as a massive SNL fan, just seeing Studio 8H in person and viewing the entire process was a truly amazing experience. Bill Hader is one of my SNL all-time favorites, so I couldn’t have wished for a better host.

After the show, as the audience was filing out of the studio, phenomenally talented cast member Kate McKinnon cut through the crowd literally right in front of me, almost unrecognizable while sporting a bald cap. It was a surreal ending to an utterly wonderful experience.

Like everyone who tries to get tickets to SNL every year, I sent my email request in August (NBC opens the requests every August) and totally forgot about it since I was never contacted. Fast-forward to March 14th 2018, I get an email from the show asking to confirm whether I could attend the SNL dress rehearsal for March 17th, 2018 (with Bill Hader as the host and Arcade Fire as the musical guest). I replied saying yes immediately.

The dress rehearsal is 2 hours long (it starts at 8pm and ends at 10pm). It is obviously run as if it is a live show, except it has a few more skits and some of the skits that air are a little shorter on live TV. So the dress rehearsal ended up being a better show than the live show. It was definitely edgier than the live show.

We arrived at 5:45pm (the email I received told us to arrive no later than 6:45pm) and a NBC guard told us to return at around 6:15pm. He also informed us that there would be no lines. Told us that we should just show up and we would be fine.

We went for a walk and returned at 6:15pm, and they let us in to stand on a specific line at around 6:20pm. Ten minutes later someone came by to give us SNL wrist bands, told us to check in -- where they checked our IDs and gave us the actual tickets -- and wrote a number (or letter for some) at the back of your envelope holding your tickets. Do keep the envelope because they will call you in by that letter/number.

We were then moved to a room with seats where we could wait comfortably. This was nice because I saw so many reviews online where people had to stand the entire time. That is no longer the case, thankfully!

After a while the NBC staff started calling people to go to the elevators. The staff called people by wristband color (purple vs blue) first, then they called people by the letters written on the back of the envelopes. They called the numbers last and we had numbers.

Once you are called, they take you to the elevators. Once you go up and arrive outside of studio 8H they collect your tickets and direct you to your seats.

Like many people already mentioned on their online reviews, the SNL staff puts the younger (better looking) crowd on the floor and the rest of us on the balcony. I took no offense to that. It is understandable, I'm 44 and my wife 43, so we are no longer in our prime. We came to terms that we are no longer as photogenic as we once were. :-)

I liked our balcony seats anyway, we got a better view of most skits. Some even happened just below us, and it was awesome!

Once we were on our seats, the band started entertaining everyone. Michael Che came out to the main stage a few minutes before the show began to pump the crowd. Then Kenan Thompson came out to the main stage to sing "Gimme Some Lovin" with Cecily Strong, Melissa Villasenor, and Kate McKinnon as background singers.

Then the crew quickly set up an "Anderson Cooper" set on the main stage for the opening sketch. It was cool to see Alex Moffat getting ready (he was playing Anderson Cooper) and the countdown to go live. It was also a nice surprise to see John Goodman (as Rex Tillerson) and Fred Armisen (as Michael Wolff) on the same opening skit as surprise guests. Not to mention the host, Bill Hader, as Scaramucci. Kate McKinnon played Jeff Sessions on a green screen right there close to where we were seating. It was fun seeing the makeup crew put her together as Jeff Sessions before the beginning of the skit.

The behind the scene stuff was the most interesting, seeing how the sets were put together between commercials was awesome.

One of the skits happened right below us. We could not see this skit, but we saw from the point of view of the cast. I got to follow the skit through reading the cue cards.

My wife and I both split as soon as the rehearsal was over to make sure we avoided the crowds to the elevator. The cool thing is that Pete Davidson literally ran into us just outside Studio 8H as he was making his way somewhere. He politely said "excuse me" and I made it seem like I didn't recognize him.

We split and took a cab to our hotel downtown to catch the live show on TV, and I can say that the rehearsal was a better show. There was more energy, it seemed. I'm sure it is not easy doing two shows in a row.

Bill Hader was the host so it was a given that Stefon appeared on the Weekend Update. A lot of the script that he reads on the cue cards, as Stefon, he is reading for the very first time, so Bill Hader would naturally start laughing and breaking the skit whenever he was blindsided with something hilarious. The Stefon script for the live show had to be different, of course, to surprise him again and get the same laughter/breaking effect.

This was just too cool of an experience! Especially if you are a long time fan of the show. SNL as a live show or dress rehearsal is a must-see. Set a reminder to request for tickets in August because it is worth it. It may take a few seasons for you to get tickets but it is way worth the wait.

After years of applying for tickets through the yearly lottery and being unsucessful I decided to get up early and join the queue with other crazy SNL fans in the cold with the hope of getting stand by. There was about a 100 people in front of us when we got to the back of the line around 6am. We chose dress rehearsal for 8pm which meant getting back to the NBC store no later than 7pm. We got there for around 6.30pm and joined another queue waiting with anticipation. I had done stand by before for The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and got in but this show just seemed like gold and I stressed for nearly 45 minutes and then I was allowed through the doors (with my husband and friend). Through security and into the lifts and then down the corridor heading straight into 8H studio. Dreams really do come true. An amazing night and great show. I have been to NY over a dozen times and this by far has been the best thing I have ever experienced.
