Stone Temple Pilots由主唱Scott Weiland、吉他手Dean Deleo、贝司手Robert Deleo及鼓手Eric KretZ组成。曲风结合重型、嘈杂的吉他音效和粗鲁无理的PUNK，并且带有鲜明GRUNGE风格。受到Led Zepplin的影响，且Kiss、Aerosmith等乐队的风格也是他们音乐的根源。
首张专辑《Core》在Billboard专辑榜前50位中停留了40多周，并跻入5甲，销量过百万。 1994年发行了同样销量过百万的第二张专辑《Purple》。乐队于1996年推出的第3张专辑《Tin Music Songs From the Vatican Gift Shop》更是打入美国榜十大，让人为之侧目。其后推出了No.4，Shangri-La Dee Da以及精选集Thank You。
当Stone Temple Pilots乐队第一次登上摇滚舞台上时，不少人都以为著名GRUNGE乐队Pearl Jam的主唱Eddie Vedder剪去长发，并且又组建了一支新乐队呢。Stone Temple Pilots的主音歌手Scott Weiland不仅相貌、举止与Eddie Vedder相似，而且他的嗓音与Eddie Vedder更加相似。90年代初，当GRUNGE摇滚不仅限于在西雅图存在，而在全美国甚至世界范围内发展的时候，Scott Weiland不甘于被视为别人的克隆物，而希望以全新的、属于自己的形象存在于摇滚乐坛。
1992年，乐队的首张专辑“Core”由ATLANTIC唱片公司发行。这其中包括一些热门歌曲，如“Plush”就是一首家喻户晓的作品。这张专辑的销量达到了300万张。Stone Temple Pilots曾参加了著名速度金属乐队Megadeth的巡演。另外，老牌摇滚乐队Aerosmith曾邀请Stone Temple Pilots为他们的巡演暖场，但遭到Stone Temple Pilots莫名其妙地拒绝，而他们却甘心为名气、资历都小得多的乐队The Butthole Surfers演出。这在乐坛引起一片哗然。
两年之后的1994年，又一张成功的作品问世了，这张专辑的名字叫“Purple”首周进榜就是冠军。这张专辑同样也售出了300万张，在商业上又取得了佳绩，而且使得Stone Temple Pilots跨入了摇滚红星的行列。曾经以为他们模仿Pearl Jam的人们，通过他们的前两张出色的作品，也能够清楚地认识到两支乐队的差别了。因此，Stone Temple Pilots的风格也得以在乐坛确立了。

Stone Temple Pilots上周在美国洛杉矶举办的KROQ Weenie Roast演出中，查斯特·贝宁顿首次以石庙向导乐队新主唱的身份亮相，石庙向导乐队之前的主唱是Scott Weiland（斯科特·维兰德）。据悉，在石庙向导乐队四十分钟的演出中，乐队演出了像《Sex Type Thing》以及《Vasoline》在内的乐队老歌，还首次演出了一首名为《Out Of Time》的新歌。

(LOS ANGELES) – Fans attending KROQ’s annual Weenie Roast over the weekend got a real surprise when Stone Temple Pilots took the stage unannounced, for a blistering set with Chester Bennington of Linkin Park as lead vocalist.
The crowd went wild as the band performed STP classics like ‘Sex Type Thing’ and ‘Vasoline’ and also debuted a brand new song, “Out of Time”– the recording of which KROQ premiered immediately following the band’s explosive 40 minute set.
When Stone Temple Pilots band members, Dean DeLeo, Robert DeLeo and Eric Kretz began thinking of singers to accompany the new music they were working on, Bennington was at the top of the list. “Chester has a one-of-a-kind voice that we’ve admired for a long time,” said Dean DeLeo. “We know Linkin Park will always be his priority, but we thought it would be cool to try something together. We managed to find the time to record a song and we’re all really happy with the result.”
“I’ve loved STP since I was 13 years old and they’ve had a huge influence on me,” explained Bennington. “When the opportunity came up to do something creative with them, I jumped at the chance. The guys in Linkin Park have been incredibly supportive of me undertaking this project while I’ve continued to work on new music with LP.”
