So, I am pretty new to Maria. I sought out her first solo album because Clarence White and Ry Cooder played on it, but then I got intrigued. I got her compilation album Midnight at the Oasis : The Collection which is 25 tracks, almost exclusively from the 70s I believe. Then I realized she was on Jerry Garcia Band's Cats Under the Stars and Warner Theatre show which I have. As well as guesting on some Linda Ronstadt stuff.

Anyhow... any fans here? Where do I go from here?

Just have her original s/t which is very good.

She also guested on Dan Hicks & his Hot Licks - Live at Davies.
So that's on my 'looking for' list.

She has an incredibly large discography going back to the early 60s. Daunting task.

Saw that Garcia Cats tour - Maria lit up the stage, sounded and looked beautiful.

Yeah, I just got Sweet Harmony and her two albums with her ex husband from the late 60s. I think she became born again Christian in the 80s and moved to lounge jazz/blues and gospel full time.

Interesting - haven't heard that work, but I am sure she did great with it. yeah she did drop from the radar. Huge Grateful Dead 'what if', sure rather would have had Maria than Donna.

Maria Muldaur is one of those really underrated artists. Of her easier to find albums from the 70's, I enthusiastically recommend her self-titled effort and Waitress In The Donut Shop. Sweet Harmony is also decent (which you already have). Can not go wrong with those 3 as a beginning.

You can check out the albums by Jim Kweskin & The Jug Band. Her name at that time was Maria D'Amato. Granted, she is lead on some songs, not all. See Jug Band Music and See Reverse Side for Title.

Love her self-titled debut. Not as big a fan of Waitress in a Donut Shop.

While it's not a great lp, Sweet Harmony has a fantastic Wendy Waldman song called Back By Fall. Really nice gentle string arrangement, bittersweet lyrics about someone leaving home to help people she doesn't know who are starving and dying.........and she hopes she'll be back by fall.

I love the "Waitress" album, especially because it has this song that I've sung to women for years ...

Probably too much information, right? What can I say, once you've seen John Holmes, we all feel a little light.

One rather pleasant oddity is the soundtrack to Steelyard Blues (1973), on which Maria Muldaur sings some of the vocals:

I am taking great pleassure in this thread, as I am thinking about where to go with my own Maria collection.

As mentioned, S/T is essential. So is also the next one, Waitress in a Donut shop, and I personally would also recommend the 3rd one - Sweet Harmony.

The only other one I own in Live In London from the 80s, and i'd recommend that one too. Don't let the tasteless cover fool you - it's high quality blues & folk.

She recorded a series of pretty swell albums for Rounder, Stony Plain and Telarc that are excellent... ranging from Cajun flavored roots music, acoustic blues, soul and a Dylan songbook album!

I know what you mean, I read Avatar and also a long expose on them in Rolling Stone back in the day. I lived in Boston, and we were all aware of them on Fort Hill. The Jug Band albums predated all the press. They started a really good construction company, that I believe Jim then moved the company to California.

Mel Lyman was the bad one!

Do you have more info on the cult and Maria's involvement? I did a cursory search but didn't find a ton.

  24. These three are very good and the mastering is pretty good.
Sweet Harmony / Southern Winds / Open Your Eyes - BGO Records

The two before this are also great.
