$3695 a month for rent. Good lord...and you would think they would actually have functioning elevators.

Ours would constantly be down for maintenance. It wa small dimly lit, old. My mom got stuck in one when the doors closed and it wouldn’t move. She was in tears it was really messed up. $2,000 for a one bedroom where the the bathroom ceiling would leak and sag down. It completely fell down one day, nobody was home good thing. They fixed it and it leaked again. Oh and we lived a few floors up so we had to walk up reaaally narrow stairs if elevator was out. People would smoke their and their was no ventilation so you had to hold your breath. This wasn’t a getto neighborhood either, there was a school and park around and everything.

i thought the same thing, $3000 a month for rent is fucking crazy

Try living in California. $3k for a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom shithole of an apartment. I hate it here.

Horrible way to go. RIP.

Oh my God that is awful how quickly things went wrong, and the poor gentleman with him, he went to reach before there was literally not an option to any longer and was left dumbfounded at what had just happened staring at the scene when everyone else ran, I can't imagine how anyone felt in that situation but I especially can't imagine how he must have felt having just gotten off the very same elevator ride himself, Absolutely insane stuff.

Rest well Sam Waisbren

u/MedicJambi avatar

This is a time I am glad there is no sound.

I imagine it's something along the lines of horror, I'd feel sick to me stomach witnessing that guy probably screamed into a bloody curl.

I can't trust any elevator from now on. How do you even be cautious of this kind of malfunctioning.

u/misterdidums avatar

Don’t try to exit the doors mid malfunction. If it feels funky, stay inside the cab

u/lujiga avatar

That's when it falls

There are at least failsafes in the shaft for falling. There is no failsafe for being crushed to death, unfortunately.

more replies More replies

It is basically impossible for a modern elevator to free fall

u/misterdidums avatar

Yeah haha but I think there are more safety mechanisms to prevent that type of catastrophic failure

u/ErikTurtle avatar

Yes. Usually ir sensors in every door and ,idk if they still use them, step plates on the floor of elevator, so that elevator knows there is someone inside.

Its good they remembered how much the appartment cost there, along with the 90 other ads they spring on you.

I do the same, I've seen too many of these videos to dilly dally between the floor and elevator...

On a simi related note, I've also been weary of trees after having one flatten the S10 I once had, I've never been the same with parking under trees after that...

u/tesseractum avatar

Had a close friend pass while sitting in his car in his driveway. No major winds or storm, just a typical afternoon, and the tree decided that was the day it was to go down. Awful, awful things happen to undeserving people sometimes. Life is a crazy thing.

The fact that this a possibility at all is a catastrophic design flaw. There should be numerous independent, redundant safety mechanisms that should be in place on every elevator to prevent something like this from happening or reduce the odds of this happening to a near-impossibility.

Are there any engineers who have worked on elevator design who can advise on what had to have failed here for this to happen?

The other guy in the elevator was lucky he was the one in front of the doors, otherwise he probably was the one that was being crushed.

survivor guilt for life i hope he is okay but if it was his friend who was crushed he will probably never recover fully mentally. the only thing thats makes it less bad is the guy probably died relatively instantly.

jesus christ

That’s some final destination shit, see the guy in front of him just survive death.

shit like this TERRIFIES me. i jump over the damn 1 inch crack between the elevator shaft and the floor everytime i have to take an elevator in case it starts moving. i know it's irrational, and the elevators i use are taken care of well, but i just can't get rid of the 'what ifs' in my head. same goes for escalators after i saw a video of a woman being absolutely devoured by the machinery after she fell through the broken metal plate(?) at the top of it. granted, it was in china, not america, but it's scary how simple negligence can lead to you get crushed or grinded up by machinery.

u/Marsian_00 avatar

Thought shit like this only happened in China

Can happen anywhere, noting is 100 percent in life.

u/Code_Merk avatar

Yep, best we can do is have failsafes for our failsafes and hope those were enough.

Emotional Fitness, be on good terms with loved ones before the start of each day and live life one day at a time.

This video is actually going to change how I enter/exit elevators now.

I'm afraid to watch, how graphic is it?

[deleted]
[deleted]

Basically folds him in half and pulls him down the shaft. Can’t see any blood or missing limbs and the like. No aftermath stuff. Depends on your definition of graphic I guess. It’s from a camera pointing at the elevator from a lobby, not from inside the elevator itself.

Oh noo, Ima have to watch it by skipping on pause just in case

[deleted]
[deleted]

It’s shocking but not graphic at least to me I guess. I’m sure you have seen worse on this sub. It almost looks cartoonish.

Not at all. Bit disturbing tho

Well, the disturbing part is what I'm afraid of most. Blood doesn't really bother me, just creepy things that will haunt my dreams.

It's honestly shitty quality too. You can just about make out that he's being sort of folded in half as he's crushed between the floor and the elevator moving downwards. At least it doesn't have sound, I would legit have nightmares

Watched it and boy I'm glad it was shitty quality with no sound. I really hope his death was very quick.

No blood, but very obviously shows a poor man folding as he's caught between the elevator and the floor he wanted

The guy is literally folded and crushed like if you put your head between your legs.

u/merkakiss12 avatar

Even without sound you can hear the guy's spine break. Everything happens very fast.

u/Hostileovaries avatar

Personally it happened so fast my brain refused to comprehend what was happening and I realized I'm not that interested in trying to figure out what happened that badly enough to watch again.

Man ,death comes so quick and unexpected.

u/iamnotpedro1 avatar

Stay inside the elevator. That’s the best we could do in an event such as this one

I thought this kinda stuff only happens in 3rd world countries. Apparently, we are safe nowhere

I'm already scared of elevators as it is, and now this.

And it’s crazy I read that there were still five people left in the elevator imagine them being trapped in there with what was left of him just terrible. RIP

Omg what really messes me up are the people who seen it, that woman who covered her eyes and sped walked away. Goodness they had no idea they would happen to walk by a tragic death

I can only imagine the crunchy sounds. Fuck...

And the bloody scream

I refuse to go in elevators, even if I have to climb more than 10 flights of stairs. I am claustrophobic and hate being in close quarters with strangers, too.

u/TomedCeht avatar

This is why I am terrified of elevators nooooooo Thank you I will take the stairs

That poor guy who got out right before him! He's so shocked and traumatized yet wanting somehow to "help" as if that was still an option :(

I just have to say he’s an idiot, the elevator was already failing and still moving and he tried to climb out, really fucking stupid idea… but yeah rip

Death by capitalism
