One of the things I don’t like in the Berserk 97 anime is that they skipped over a lot of Guts’s trauma. The wounds chapters are an integral part of Guts’s character arc due to him getting over the trauma of being molested by Donovan and I feel like it was glossed over yet they included the rape scene at the eclipse.

The 97 anime was basically an ad to get people to read the manga. That’s why it’s not 1 for 1 and leaves stuff out. I’m sure censorship probably played a role too.

I can emphatise with the criticism, but wouldn’t get behind it. To me, the blanks I got to discover later reading the manga, only made the story stronger, and made me appreciate the anime more. Because the childhood trauma certainly is alluded to, save for explicitly. You get the sense of his past haunting him, and actually have enough clues to figure out what kind of deal it was. It plays to the trauma aspect, that he doesn’t seem to specifically remember it himself, and we share this ambiguity. That’s bold to me. Plus when you finally know, it adds to the ”show, don’t tell” effect when watching.

But guts being touch averse doesn’t make as much sense without the knowledge of his childhood trauma tho. Like it’s actually relevant to his character.
I know berserk is usually super explicit but they could do it in a subtle way, like show the part where gambino takes the money and fade to black after Donavan enters Guts’s tent.

Lol Japan has no issue stereotyping black people and sexualizing children in anime. The only reason it wasn’t included was for censorship or smthn probably. They probably deemed it more intense and obviously less important for the story than casca’s scene (probably also partially due to homophobia).

It’s happened before in anime or at least has been alluded to and it doesn’t matter what Donovan’s race is and I don’t think you can argue the scene being racist.

Both the '97 and '16 anime adaptations decided not to add Donovan since its a fucked up memory and prolly since it would be acceptable on tv. Only the newee movie adaptations show slight glimpses of daddy Donny and its on us to piece together what happened.
The memorial edition goes all the way with it which is nice. Well, not all the way, but you see one of the worst panels.
I always reminded it as being in there. Must have implanted it in my mind. There is no difference between the US and the german version, is there?

Ya it's the worse parts of all the anime to be honest. They shouldn't even make anime for berserk if you are worried about censorship. The dark parts aren't just dark for no reason as most of us know it plays such a huge role in character development. Like if you don't show guts getting touched at least imply it enough it makes zero sense for him to hate touch. Like zero .
Those things need to be in it or it shallows the story it's all about trauma the habits developed from trauma an how those habits are over come or consume those afflicted an sometimes a combo of both.

Sir, they had 25 episodes that ended in the eclipse. Some stuff had to get cut and while Guts' backstory is important, some parts could be omitted with it still working.
