Research

My research is aimed at the study of scalability, dependability and security of networked systems and applications. My interests include distributed computing, network security, and network protocols. I have led several research efforts aimed at developing new protocols and architectures for ensuring dependability of the Internet infrastructure in the presence of security attacks, hardware and software failures, and operational faults. My research has been sponsored by NSF, DHS, DARPA, NSA, ONR and numerous companies including Cisco, Intel, Google, Boeing, VeriSign, Hitachi, Hewlett-Packard and IBM.

While at the University of Michigan, my research on Internet infrastructure security served as a catalyst for significant changes in commercial Internet routing software implementation, impacting routing policies employed by Internet Service Providers worldwide. It also formed the basis for the Internet security company Arbor Networks, which I co-founded in 2001, and served as chairman until its acquisition in 2010. At Arbor Networks, my team and I developed highly scalable, service provider-class solutions for protecting networks against distributed denial of service attacks, zero-day network threats and routing exploits. Over the last decade, Arbor Networks’s technology has been utilized by the world’s leading companies to measure, monitor and defend networks against attack.
