PROUNCEATION: [Pass Christ-Ee-Ann]
Welcome to the city of Pass Christian, otherwise known as The Pass. This coastal town is situated on a peninsula in the Mississippi Sound, an embayment that leads to the Gulf of Mexico. Its white sand beaches skirt the emerald green waters, where you'll find some fantastic fishing. Actually, seafood was so abundant in the area, it was named Oyster Pass by the French explorers who visited in 1699. Today, amazing shops, historic architecture and plenty of room to build your own waterfront home might attract you to The Pass. But it’s the laid-back people and relaxing atmosphere that makes you want to stay.
Living in a beach community offers all the sun and sand you’d imagine. But Pass Christian has more to it than that. The town has a large historic district where century-old cottages rest alongside 1800s mansions. Today, 119 homes and buildings occupy the district. Hurricane Katrina destroyed many of the historic residences. In fact, the storm destroyed over 7,000 homes in the area, leaving only 500 unscathed. This means many houses have been restored and remodeled if not rebuilt altogether. Undeveloped land to build on is abundant in The Pass with lots selling for as little as $3,000 for less than an acre to as much as $840,000 for acres of waterfront property. Residences are often raised here to prevent flooding but that doesn’t mean they all look the same. Instead, you can find anything from an octagonal house to a more traditional Acadian style. Prices range from $150,000 for a one-bedroom, one-bath camp home to $1.5 million for a three-bedroom, two-bath Gulf-side estate.
Those with school-age children will be pleased to learn the Pass Christian school district is one of the best in the state. The elementary school is one of the most diverse public facilities in Mississippi according to Niche. Pass Christian Middle School was nationally recognized as a 2012 Blue Ribbon School by the US Department of Education. It offers several fine arts programs, nearly a dozen sports teams and four technology environments. Pass Christian High is the third-best public high school in the state according to Niche. It has 15 honors classes, 16 student organizations and a career center.
The city’s central green space is the War Memorial Park. Founded in 1945 as a remembrance of the young men from Pass Christian who fought in World War II, the park also features monuments for those lost in Hurricanes Camille and Katrina. The 10-acre space has a lush green lawn, baseball field and unique tree sculptures by artist Marlin Miller. A walking track, gazebo and playground round out the everyday offerings while special events like the Butterflies in the Pass Monarch Festival or The Pass Market, a weekly affair with 30 to 65 vendors and food trucks, makes War Memorial Park a true community gathering place.
The coastal enclave has a multitude of eating spots, but one of the most frequently mentioned about town is Cat Island Coffeehouse. Opened in 2013, the café is named after nearby Cat Island, which got its name when French explorers mistook raccoons for odd-looking cats there. Pass Christian Books is also located in the building and has a second story focused on Mississippi authors and subjects. The unusual store functions as a local gathering space too, with a deck overlooking the harbor and the Gulf.
Bacchus on the Beach is another well-regarded waterside restaurant. Serving Cajun cuisine and handcrafted cocktails, the eatery welcomes you with a relaxed atmosphere and gorgeous water views. Open daily, it has weekday specials and a happy hour in addition to dishes like Gris Gris oysters, coastal West Indies salad, and the catch of the day.
Combining Southern charm with a beach attitude, Pass Christian is home to gorgeous views, a great school district, abundant recreation and fabulous dining.
