Thomas Newman Obituary

Thomas Risher Newman, 82 of Stanton passed away on Thursday, February 29, 2024. Services will be held at 2pm Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at First Baptist Church Big Spring, TX. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park.  Tom was born on December 16, 1941 in Big Spring to Thomas and Kawana Newman. Tom went to grade school in Lomax and graduated high school in Stanton, where he played football and ran track. He was active in 4-H, showing lambs and received the Gold Star Award for his record book. Tom married Marilyn Sale on June 21, 1963. They had three children Kevin, Kendall, and Kody. Tom and Marilyn would have been married 61 years this coming June. Tom was a member of the First Baptist Church of Stanton. He served on the Stanton ISD school board. Served as a director of the American Chianina Association, American Jr. Rodeo Association, and the Barrel Futurities of America.
Together with Marilyn they built a close-knit family. He had a love for farming and ranching. He also loved helping his kids and grandkids compete in stock shows and rodeos. Tom in his later years enjoyed quail hunting with his dogs and going to Ruidoso to watch his racehorses. One of his highlights was winning the Ruidoso Futurity in 2017. Those who knew Tom knew he loved a good dog, a good horse, and a real show calf. Tom was a very humble man; however, he did everything to the best of his ability and found success in nearly every endeavor.
His strong work ethic and will to win has been passed on to his children and grandchildren whom he was so proud of. If you knew Tom, you knew he loved his family with his entire being. He is survived by wife Marilyn, son Kevin and wife Mandy Newman of Stanton, daughter Kody and husband Lonnie Horwood of Sterling City, and bonus son Rusty and wife Melinda Allred of Graham. Grandchildren, Dakota Newman of Stanton, Flint and wife Maggie Newman of Stanton, Tristan Himes of Sterling City, Katlin and Valerie Horwood of Sterling City, Carly and Sam Janca of San Angelo, Tate Horwood of Sterling City, Trisha and Reggie Halfmann of Garden City. Great grandchildren, Grayson Halfmann, Keller Halfmann, Hazel Halfmann, Beckett Janca, Crew Janca, and Scottie Horwood. Brother Fred and wife Debra Newman of Del Rio. Nephews, Tye and Kacie Newman of San Angelo, Robby Newman and Texana Woodward of Pleasanton. Great nieces and nephews Rylin Newman and Reagan Newman. He is preceded in death by his parents Thomas and Kawana Newman, son Kendall Newman, and nephew Clinton Newman.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to First Baptist Church of Stanton building fund, P.O. Box 1168 Stanton, TX 79782.
