When this came out in theaters, I saw an ad for it online and thought, "a vampire movie with hot people! That's exactly what I need in my life." Then, I saw all these awful reviews from critics and had second thoughts about whether it was worth my time. I talked it over with my husband, and he said to forget what other people say and that we should go see it. He was right! I ended up seeing it twice in theaters.
This movie is exactly what I expected it to be. Here's what other people said and why you should give it a chance.
People: The trailers give away the big "spoiler".
Me: Yes, they do. If I didn't know this was a vampire movie, I probably wouldn't have been interested. I don't love horror, but I love vamps.
People: The plot moved super slow until the dinner scene, then it moved too fast and we wanted to see more action at the end.
Me: That's nice, but I'm a sap and enjoyed every moment of the blossoming friendships and relationships in the beginning of the movie. I'm not much for gore, so the subtlety of the action was a win for me.
People: Some of the back story about Evie's family is missing.
Me: It's actually implied in the theater version, but if you purchase this DVD, it includes the unreleased version that has more detail on this.
People: It's "woke" and repeatedly makes jokes about white people, classism, racism, colonialism, etc.
Me: Regardless of what your views are, the jokes in this movie are funny, and the friendships and personalities in this movie are very wholesome. It portrays stigmas that are still very real in every society, but it does so in a playful way and is not meant to be a focal point of the plot. It shouldn't offend you.
People: It wasn't scary enough, and there were only a few "jump scares" that got old.
Me: Well, I'm sorry that you're so desensitized by everything in your life, but I don't get out much and I found it to be scary enough at times. I definitely jumped a few times, and I felt on-edge during the action scenes. If you didn't, it sounds like a personal problem.
People: I didn't love the ending.
Me: There's an alternate ending on this DVD! But, you got me there. I didn't particularly love the ending either (no spoilers here!) because I wanted there to be a possibility for a sequel of some sort since I liked the movie so much. Still, I thought it was an interesting ending.
All in all, I loved it. The acting in this movie is phenomenal, and the chemistry between Walt and Evie is swoon-worthy. You'll find yourself smiling at all the Dracula references but also enjoying the modern-day twist on an old story. Just give it a chance!
