The Iron Bridge in Lugoj , symbol of the city - it has become over the 100+ years since it has been built over the Timis river.
The bridge was built in early 1900 and it is standing ever since - it had undergone some refurbishment so it is in use - and probably will be.
The steel used to build the bridge has been cast in the factories in Resita (once those factories were the pride of the Habsburgs and also supplied steel that was used to build the Eiffel tower).
So when you are in Lugoj, check out the Iron Bridge - it is interesting that's for sure.

Named after a prominent figure of the city - Iosif Constantin Dragan - born in Lugoj in the early 1900. He was a businessman, historian and writer.
He's mainly known for the funding of the sculpture of king Decebalus - the last king of the Dacians - in a mountain on the Danube gorges ( the King's overlooking the Danube near Mraconia Monastery).
So the main square of Lugoj was named after him.
In this square there is a pedestrian area where you can find several pubs and restaurants , also the Catholic Cathedral is to be find in this square. Surrounding the square there are beautiful palaces from the era when this city was part of the Hapsburg empire - so for those of you who are interested in 18-19 century architecture this place could be very interesting.
Parking in the square is possible - depending on the availability of the spots - so if you arrive by car it should be no issue.
When in Lugoj - stop for a few minutes in the IC Dragan square - it can be interesting.

After the Hapsburg's have drove out the Ottomans from the region of Banat they have started the regularization of the rivers and marshes in the area. Now this is a construction from that area.
The dam has been built in 1758 and its working ever-since - so the construction is more than 250 years old.
It can be visited - not everyday and not all-day (hence when we arrived we could not get inside) - but it can be very interesting and it is free to visit, no entrance fee.
So if you want to see an interesting construction , especially if you are in the area, is definitely worth stopping here. (I'll need to stop next time when I'm in the area).

The Timis river (Tibiscus from the Roman times, Temesch in German) is the river that crosses the Romanian portion of the Banat region.
It has its spring in the Semenic mountains and it flows through the plains of Banat - near Timisoara - and crosses through the city of Lugoj.
In Lugoj the shores are clean and accessible - from the "Iron Bridge" (another landmark of the city) you can take some very nice pics of the river
In terms of the activities you can go angling on the river (make sure you got the appropriate paper work cover - you need a permit for angling on the river), you can go kayaking on the river if you want - swimming can be an option (but not in the city, I guess), plus the walking along the river can be very relaxing.
So, if you are in the area you can check it out.

In the center of the town of Lugoj , near the Iosif Constantin Dragan square you shall find the palace that currently is housing the City Hall of Lugoj.
Lugoj is a small city, nonetheless over the centuries it had a importance and during the Hapsburg reign of Banat it played a bigger administrative role than today.
(Even the Kaiser has visited Lugoj a few times).
The city has has been built in the early 1900 - and as strange as it might look is not declared a historical monument, yet ... nonetheless it is beautiful.
Visiting inside I have no idea if its possible, since its an institution of the state and in Romania is always a an issue (never understood why) visiting public institutions for the sake of visiting.
Near the entrance of the building you will find a commemorative plaque telling you that Lugoj was the second free city of Romania (free of communism in 1989) - after Timisoara.
So when you are in Lugoj check out the City Hall, definitely very good for a few min stop and a few 1 or 2 pictures.

One of the main landmarks of Lugoj is the Catholic Cathedral in the IC Dragan square.
Built in the mod 1800 (1843 - 1854 - as the plaque near the entrance tells us) simple, grey building on the outside - colorful beautifully decorate altar inside.
When we arrived service was in progress so took some quick pics and left. (in terms o visiting hours I'm not sure - so it is a chance that you don't find the Cathedral open).
If you decide you go inside wear a face-mask (C-19 regulations ), dress appropriately and be respectful ( in the end don't forget, you thread on holy ground).
Visiting is free of charge - however donations are welcome.
Overall an interesting building - regardless if you are a religious person or not , should stop for a few minutes to visit the Cathedral.

In the center of Lugoj just across the street from the Town Hall you shall find the Orthodox Church of the city.
Visiting is free of charge - nonetheless donations are welcome - also keep in mind that unlike the majority of churches around the world , this (and many more in Romania) are not open 24/7 - so it might be closed when you are there.
The church was built in the 1700 - the style is baroque - and has been declared a historical monument.
Inside decoration - icons and altar are beautiful (and very typical for the orthodox churches), - and the paintings dating back a few centuries will also be interesting - even it you are not a religious person but if you are interested in arts you will like it for sure.
So if you are in Lugoj , check it out - it might be interesting for you.

When you are in Lugoj you shall find in the city center just across the street from the Town Hall/City Hall the Saint Nicholas Tower.
This is what remained of the old catholic church.
The building is from the 15th century - refurbished several times during the centuries - and still standing - reminding us of the times that have past.
It is very interesting - for those of you who interested in architecture it is definitely a spot worth checking out. Also for those of you who interested in the history of Lugoj for sure you'll find it interesting.
Overall when you are in Lugoj and you walk around you should stop here for a few pics.

In the Iosif Constantin Dragan square in Lugoj - just behind the Catholic Cathedral you shall the monument of the "Unknown soldier" - erected in the memory of the fallen heroes of WWI - The Great War as it remained in history.
The statue of a charging rifleman - bayonet is on muzzle and the soldier is leaning forward, chance the charging stance - is sitting on tall pedestal. In front of it the symbol of the "Eternal flame" - a stone flame - is placed.
On the sides of of the pedestal you shall find 2 bas-reliefs depicting scenes of importance for Romania - I let you decipher those.
On the front of the pedestal , facing the visitor, you shall find a representation of the She-wolf (Lupa Capitolina) with Romulus and Remus - hitting to the Roman descent of the Romanian people (long has faded the glory of Rome...).
Overall and interesting monument, free to visit in the center of Lugoj - if you are in the area stop for a few moments and remember the "Unknown soldiers".

Once again a piece of modern art that I don't really get , still a monument erected to commemorate the fallen heroes of WWII.
The shape is an Alpha and an Omega (the letters from the Greek alphabet, with some symbolism , like beginning and the end, religion, god and country., ... you know , all these and something more, that was in the mind of the artist ) and has names of fallen soldiers listed on its sides - no rank, just names.
For sure it is interesting and since is near the I.C. Dragan square once you are in the area it is worth it to stop for a few minutes for some pictures.
(Personally I consider that the Heroes deserve more than this dull and ambiguous monument - however it is a place where one should stop and keep a moment of silence in the memory of the fallen soldiers).

First things first - the ruins are located on a hill, near the village of Jdioara. Unfortunately you can't select, can't add and the only way to put this place on the map was the option to tie to Lugoj.
Location - about 18-20 km from Lugoj and 80 km from Timisoara. Near the village of Jdioara - you will need to drive close to the cemetery of the village where you can leave your car. From there I recommend you start hiking. (there is the option to drive on a dirt road to the glen where you find the entrance to the tack going up the hill where you find the ruins. )
Track - is not the easiest, you got up hill, with some steep portions , but the track itself is beautiful, in spring , if you walk with your eyes open you will see a lot of flowers blooming, you'll see lizards that are moving around, woodpeckers , etc.
Track itself through the forested hill it is better than the fortress itself to be honest.
Fortress ruins - the fortress was built by the order of Hungarian kings in the XIVth century - about 1320 and it served the kings and local leaders until the XVIII-th century when in 1701 was blown up - as part of the treaty of Karlowitz 1699 where the Habsburgs and the Ottoman have decided to dismantle the fortifications of Banat region.
So the fortress became a ruin on the 16th of March 1701 and it stayed a ruin ever since, degrading constantly.
Nowadays is overgrown by bushes and trees and weed so very little of the ruined walls are still visible.(as you can see in the pics - it ain't much).
However, for those of you into history it may be interesting - if you are looking for a day in nature - this place is definitely worth it, as said the track in the forest is just great and very easy to follow
The views from above are very nice - so it is definitely worth the climb.
And remember - is not in Lugoj ! it is like 20 km from Lugoj in the direction of Caransebes in the village of Jdioara!
