Roy Atwell Obituary

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Roger Atwell, of Summerville, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Roy passed away on November 7, 2023, in Charleston, South Carolina, at the age of 74. He was born on May 2, 1949 in Tazewell, Virginia, and was a figure of strength, compassion, and unwavering kindness throughout his life.

Roy graduated from Tazewell High School in 1968 and initially worked in construction before joining the United States Air Force in 1969. His distinguished military career began with an assignment to the 89th Airlift Wing at Andrews Air Force Base servicing Air Force One, and he subsequently volunteered to serve in Vietnam. Roy married the love of his life, Ginger Lee Shaw, in 1974, before embarking on his third tour in Vietnam. He served with honor across Southeast Asia, before his final assignment at Charleston Air Force Base in 1978, where he retired in 1989 as a Tech Sgt. During his service, he earned an Associate's Degree in Law Enforcement.

After retiring from the military, Roy continued to serve his country as a contractor for the Department of Defense, including participation in Operation Desert Storm. His passions included playing racquetball, a skilled scroll saw artist, and an active member of the Masonic Lodge and Omar Shrine Temple. Being a dedicated Shriner, he spent much of his time and effort raising funds for their Children's Hospital, reflecting his deep commitment to community service.

Roy leaves behind his beloved wife, Ginger; his children, Alexis and Jason (Elisa); his adored grandchildren, Adalyn and Evan; and his brother, Donald Heflin (Lauren). He was predeceased by his grandparents, George P. Atwell and Nannie Crockett Atwell, and his mother Lorraine Estepp.

Roy was a man who never met a stranger and would not hesitate to extend a helping hand. He was an amazing father, a loving "Paw Paw" and a trustworthy friend whose impact on our lives will forever be remembered and missed.

A service to celebrate Roy's remarkable life will be held at Knightsville United Methodist Church on Saturday, November 18, 2023, at 11 am. Following the service, friends and family are invited to continue the celebration of Roy's life at the Lowcountry Public House.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Shriners Hospitals for Children by visiting https://donate.lovetotherescue.org, or the Ralph H. Johnson VA Medical Center, https://www.va.gov/charleston-health-care, causes dear to Roy's heart.
