The Bob England Hockey Foundation supports youth hockey players whose families are experiencing financial difficulty so that those children may be able to continue to participate in the great game of hockey.   Created by his loving family, the foundation honors the memory and spirit of Bob England and continues his passion for supporting others and giving to those in need.

Bob
England’s
Story

In 1959 Robert (Bob) England attended his first ever hockey game at Olympia Stadium to see the Detroit Red Wings. From that day on he was hooked on hockey.  To help make ends meet while his family grew, he took a part time job working in the parking lot at Olympia Stadium for over 15 years.  His love for hockey continued to grow and we, his children, shared his passion for the game.   Three of the four of us eagerly took to the ice as soon as we were old enough and have been fortunate to pass down that love of the game to our children.

In 1974, Bob began a struggle with serious health issues, and eventually due to those issues and the financial strain, the costs of participating in such an expensive sport became too much for our family to sustain.  Only through the support and donations of many wonderful people in the local hockey community were we able to continue to play hockey as kids.  Dad would often comment on how blessed we were to have had so many people in our lives, some we knew and many anonymous, that supported our family through some very difficult times and allowed his children to have some semblance of ‘normalcy’ during those extremely difficult years.

Even through all his personal struggles, Bob was always one of the most kind, caring, and generous people you could meet. Sadly he passed away in October 2016 and as a way to honor him and give back to the community as he did, we have established a foundation in his name. This foundation is designed to support youth hockey players whose families are experiencing financial difficulty so that those children may be able to continue to participate in the great game of hockey.
