Cody Simpson on track for Paris 2024 after fifth-place finish at Commonwealth Games
The Australian had already claimed relay gold and on Tuesday finished fifth in the 100m butterfly in a stacked field, which included Chad le Clos and James Guy. Joshua Linedo claimed gold.
Cody Simpson's dream of competing at an Olympic Games is on track after making an individual final in his first ever international tournament just two years into training after 10 years away from swimming.
The break enabled the Australian to pursue another dream job of pop star, who produced four studio albums and appeared at the launch of the Queen's Baton Relay at Buckingham Palace, no less, ahead of the Glasgow 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The 25-year-old came fifth in the men's 100m fly on Tuesday (2 August) at the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games and had already claimed gold in the men's 4x100m freestyle relay a few days earlier.
Canadian Joshua Liendo claimed gold in a time of 51.24s, with James Guy of England and Australia's Matthew Temple winning silver on a shared time of 51.40s.
South Africa's Chad le Clos was close to becoming the most decorated Commonwealth Games athlete in any sport but just finished fourth (51.61s) to stay on 18 medals in the multi-sport event, including seven gold. A still impressive feat considering his acknowledgement of mental health issues at Tokyo 2020 in 2021.
