VILLA ARTEMIS
In Palm Beach, the meticulous overhaul of a historic mansion is hardly a curiosity. But there is nothing typical about the reincarnation of an iconic house that has been in the same family for more than fifty years. Villa Artemis remains one of the last vestiges of a bygone era, when quiet elegance was the order of the day. Built in 1916, Villa Artemis’s Regency design was a departure for architect F. Burrall Hoffman, whose most famous work was Miami’s Mediterranean Revival masterpiece, Villa Vizcaya. When Jane Horvitz’s father, the late Leighton Rosenthal, purchased the house in 1959 as a surprise for his wife, Honey, he enlisted Palm Beach architect Marion Sims Wyeth to remove the second floor and enclose an interior courtyard to create a new living room. The modifications streamlined the house to make it more manageable and a less obtrusive presence in the surrounding landscape. Jane and Michael Horvitz sought to continue this approach when bringing the property into the twenty-first century. .
