Synopsis
Fascism has forced the leadership of the Italian Communist Party to settle in Paris. In Italy arrests of militants are decimating the organization, so Emilio is sent on a mission in the area of Turin, to put out of harm whistleblowers.

The fine period reconstruction, vibrant narrative tension (bordering on thriller), attention to detail and excellent acting by the entire cast, starting with a Volontè in a state of grace, allow Maselli to offer a political film that outlines the spirit of the times and the nature of the feelings of the underground militants. With repeated references to the intense ideological discussion going on in the 1930s among the adherents of the communist organization. In short, a very timely period portrait with no smears whatsoever. A difficult, risky undertaking, but happily brought to a conclusion by the director avoiding expressive academisms as well as mannered ideologisms. Incomplete viewing. Not what I expected. Very talky and boring. But suffering from really bad picture and worse subtitles I thought I'd give up and try another day.
