With strong acting, a solid premise, and a refreshingly dark approach to its dystopian setting, The Maze Runner stands out from the crowded field of YA sci-fi adventures.

Udita Jhunjhunwala Livemint As director Wes Ball builds the eeriness around the complex entrapment of a community of boys living a Lord Of The Flies type existence, he is ably aided by imaginative and well-executed production design and special effects. Aug 14, 2019 Full Review Mark Kermode Observer (UK) Generally redeemed by feature first-timer Wes Ball's forthright action sequences. Rated: 3/5 Oct 11, 2014 Full Review Tara Brady Irish Times Whither post-apocalyptic young adult sci-fi? With two movies to go, Hunger Games already feels overly familiar. Rated: 2/5 Oct 11, 2014 Full Review David Nusair Reel Film Reviews ...benefits strongly from O’Brien’s charismatic performance and a smattering of above-average action sequences... Rated: 2.5/4 May 27, 2024 Full Review Grant Watson Fiction Machine A clearly told, broadly appealing, nicely creepy science fiction thriller. Rated: 7/10 May 7, 2024 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Despite strong performances and a fascinating setup, it feels like a typical episode of Lost in which more questions are asked instead of answered—except here, there's no promise of a new episode next week. Ethan F This film came out when films based off books were catching movie theaters like wild fire. Unfortunately this also came out around when Hunger Games was at its most popular. When I first heard about Maze Runner, I looked past it thinking that it was just another hunger games, but boy was I wrong. It was a grim, claustrophobic setting similar to Attack on Titan, and a truly engaging story. Each actor seems to care about the roles they took on and give it their very best. The character development was a little thin, but I never found myself getting bored with them. The action scenes are suspenseful and fast paced and I always found myself worried for the characters. The digital effects hold up well and the sound design is fantastic. However, the film is a slow burner. I didn't feel like the film was 3 hours but it did feel like it was going slower than it should have, but I still was engaged. Overall: this is a film I found to be better than hunger games due to its story, characters, and action scenes, but the films takes it at a slower pace than I would want. 4.5/5 Rated 4.5 out of 5 stars 05/30/24 Full Review Justin T This suffers from having a less interesting world than The Hunger Games (2012), less charm than Cube (1997) and far less originality than Dark City (1998). Whilst it is not a bad film it is also nothing special or memorable. The casting, direction, acting and overall production quality are excellent it is let down by slow world building, mostly forgettable characters and an unoriginal story. It's worthy of your time but probably only once and if you have nothing else you want to watch. Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars 05/22/24 Full Review Justin W A new perspective on a post-apocalyptical story which did well in keeping you engaged in your seat for the whole sprint. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/19/24 Full Review Bella B i found out about maze runner on social media, i immediately fell in love with these movies, even enough to purchase the book series. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/12/24 Full Review Mira K I really enjoyed watching this film. Entertaining. On a deeper level it is not anything spectacular but I really enjoy stories like this and Hunger games (or Battle royal etc.). Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/11/24 Full Review Layla B i love this film it’s my favourite a it’s very well adapted from the original book Rated 5 out of 5 stars 05/07/24 Full Review Read all reviews
