2022 Primary Election results for Pulaski County

Three Republicans ran for the open state representative seat for District 16 to succeed retiring State Rep. Doug Gutwein. In the Pulaski County portion of the vote, Kendall Culp of Jasper County received 649 votes, followed by Barbara Neihouser of Francesville with 402 and Bryan Washburn of Jasper County with 344.

Circuit court clerk JoLynn Behny received 895 votes, to her challenger Patty Sullivan's 677 votes, while assessor Holly VanDerAA won 913 votes compared to her challenger Shianne Zellers' 755 votes.

For County Council Dist. 1, Brad Bonnell defeated Stephanie Wheeler 278-179. In the other contested county council race, Mike Tiede defeated Bill Boehning 290-178 in Dist. 4.

In the Winamac Town Council at-large race, Alvin Parish and Danyelle Weaver each collected 151 votes, to Jim Watkins' 149 votes for the two available council seats.

In the contested Monroe Township Trustee race, incumbent Michelle Schmicker won 333 votes to challenger Debra Winter's 213 votes. In the three-way race for Salem Township Trustee, Mike Gayer had 139 votes, Sara Strus had 94, and Jay Johnson had 25.

Republican voters selected Doug Gutwein, Dan Murphy, JoLynn Behny and Holly VanDerAa as delegates to the state convention.

The Pulaski County voting totals, by precinct, will be added to this article later on Wednesday.

 

Voter Turnout

 Pulaski County had a 21.71 percent voter turnout for the 2022 Indiana Primary Election Tuesday, as reported by the county election board (compared to 31.03 percent in the 2020 Primary).

A total of 1,975 voters cast ballots, out of a total 9,098 registered voters. (Those numbers were 2,375 voters out of a total 7,653 registered in 2020.) Of those who voted, 1,431 cast their ballots on election day, while 454 participated in early in-person voting, and 90 took advantage of mail-in voting.

Winamac Community HS 2024 commencement June 2

WINAMAC - Commencement exercises for the Class of 2024 at Winamac Community High School will be at 2 p.m., Sunday June 2, at the high school gymnasium.

Pulaski County Farmers Market open for 2024 season

Pulaski County Farmers Market is open for the summer season with a weekly locations in Winamac.

The Market features fresh produce, plus, local meats, maple syrup, honey, eggs, baked goods, sweet treats, cut flowers and coffee. The market will be open from 9 a.m. to 12 noon, Saturdays June through September, on Main Street in front of the courthouse in Winamac.

Parkview plans public Summer Festival series, including a farmers market

FRANCESVILLE – A monthly Summer Festival series has been planned by Parkview Haven in Francesville to run June through September at its facility on the north edge of town.

The event will feature a farmers market, plus local vendors, food trucks, arts and crafts and more. The public is welcome to participate.

'Moonlight Over the Tippy' bike ride June 7

The Friends of the Panhandle Pathway are once again sponsoring their annual bike ride. "Moonlight Over the Tippy."

The ride will begin at 7 p.m., Friday, June 7, at the Historic Railroad Freight Depot in downtown Winamac.

Yakym district staff to hold local mobile office hours June 10, 17.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Rudy Yakym (IN-02) has announced that his staff will hold mobile office hours in Pulaski County June 10 and 17, in Winamac and Francesville, respectively.

Yakym’s mobile office will visit throughout Indiana's Second District in June to assist constituents with casework questions.

Beloved FB milkshakes may no longer be served at county fair

WINAMAC – Pulaski County Farm Bureau has announced the discontinuation of milkshakes at its county fair booth for 2024.

That is, unless a volunteer steps up who is willing to assume maintenance and management of the milkshake machine, according to Tasha Mitchell, vice president of the local Farm Bureau.

The organization has served the well-loved milkshakes at the fair for over 30 years.

State Road 14 to be closed east of Winamac

PULASKI/FULTON COUNTIES - SR 14 will close Wednesday (May 8) between CR 1100W and SR 17 in Fulton County. Approximately 1-mile closures will continue westward sequentially until the scheduled pipe replacements have been completed. Resurfacing of the entire roadway will follow.

While local access will be maintained, through traffic should seek alternate routes. The official detour will follow US 35, SR 10 and SR 17.

New accessible walkway available at Tippecanoe River State Park 

WINAMAC - Tippecanoe River State Park guests with mobility challenges who want to enjoy the overlook to the park’s waterfowl area now have the option of using its new accessible sidewalk.

“This is a great area to sit on a bench and enjoy the wildlife and natural surroundings,” said property manager Vernon Gillum. “Turtles, frogs, snakes and songbirds are frequent visitors to this area, and other wildlife as well, such as hawks, raccoons and waterfowl can also be seen.”

Farmers catch up on planting during drier weather

EAST LANSING, MI - A period of dry weather allowed for substantial planting progress throughout Indiana last week, according to Nathanial Warenski, state statistician, USDA NASS (National Agriculture Statistics Service), Indiana Field Office.

Topsoil moisture levels remained stable, with 94 percent rated adequate or surplus. The average temperature for the week was 71.2 degrees Fahrenheit, 6.5 degrees above normal for the state. The statewide average precipitation was 0.77 inches, 0.25 inches below normal.

All 92 Indiana counties opt in for second year of historic public health initiative

INDIANAPOLIS (May 22) – Gov. Eric Holcomb has announced that all 92 Indiana counties have opted in to Health First Indiana (HFI) funding for 2025. HFI was established by legislation passed in the 2023 legislative session that transforms public health, and Holcomb has made public health a priority of his administration.

In Pulaski County, $170,318 has been designated to the 2024 county budget for the health department.

Pulaski County unemployment rate drops to 2.9% in April

Pulaski County's unemployment rate dropped to 2.9 percent in April, down from 3.5 percent in March the Indiana Department of Workforce Development reported Monday, (May 20). The rate was 2.4 percent a year ago.

The county had 6,528 employed persons in a labor force of 6,724 in April. In March those numbers were 6,369 of 6,597. A year ago the numbers were 6,498 of 6,656.

 

Students can now apply for $5K work-based learning scholarships

STATEHOUSE (May 20) – State Reps. Kendell Culp (R-Rensselaer) and Jack Jordan (R-Bremen) encourage high school students who want to pursue work-based learning and credentials to apply for a Career Scholarship Account.

Culp said Hoosier students in grades 10-12 at a state accredited public or private school can receive up to a $5,000 state-funded scholarship to pursue apprenticeships, applied learning experiences, work-based learning and credentials attainment. About 2,000 spots are available for the 2024-25 school year and students may  apply for a Career Scholarship Account until the Oct. 1 deadline.

May 29: Indiana reports COVID cases up in 7-day average, at 45

INDIANAPOLIS (May 29) – The Indiana Department of Health reported Wednesday that the state’s 7-day average COVID-19 count stood at 45 cases for the period of May 19-25. That number is up three cases from the previous revised count. The total state COVID deaths for the week was zero. Indiana's all-time COVID deaths total 26,529.

Pulaski County reported no new cases and no deaths to IDH in the latest seven-day report. The county's all-time pandemic numbers are 3,725 (reported) COVID cases and 95 deaths.

MONTEREY – County police are investigating the death of a woman found unresponsive in her camping tent Saturday, at Rising Sun Campground near Monterey.

The identity and age of the woman has not been released, pending notification of the family.

West Central HS awards diplomas to 46 graduates

FRANCESVILLE - The 57th annual commencement exercises at West Central High School were Sunday (May 26), in the school gymnasium. Diplomas were awarded to 46 seniors.

The program opened with a baccalaureate service at 2 p.m., sponsored by the West Central Ministerial Association, followed by the commencement ceremonies at 2:30 p.m. The baccalaureate speaker was Jeremy Glasford, student pastor at First Christian Church, Francesville.

Students honored at Winamac 2024 Fine Arts Banquet

WINAMAC – Winamac Community High School held its annual Fine Arts Banquet Friday (May 17).  The program included presentation of top awards in band, choir and drama.

Students were also honored with participation certificates for the academic year 2023-24 along with departmental caption awards.  Band and Choir students also received their letters and chevrons for letter jackets based upon years of participation.

Bonds sold for courthouse renovation project

Meridian Street to partially close for construction

The bond sale for the financing of the Pulaski County Courthouse renovation project was conducted Thursday (May 16) by Baker Tilly, the county’s accounting and financial advising firm.

Details remain to be completed, and closing is expected in early June. The successful buyer was R.W. Baird & Co., an investment firm headquartered in Milwaukee.

2 Indiana banks win statewide award for ‘Commitment to Community’

INDIANAPOLIS (May 14) – Alliance Bank, Francesville, and Horizon Bank, Michigan City, have been honored with the Indiana Bankers Association C2C (Commitment to Community) Awards for outstanding community service performed during 2023.

Alliance Bank won the category of banks with assets below $500 million. Investing in the communities the bank serves is one of the four tenets of its mission.

West Central School Board reviews next facilities updates

FRANCESVILLE - The West Central School Board reviewed  a planned improvements listing that will be undertaken in the next bond project at its monthly meeting May 2.

Discussion followed with Superintendent Dr. Cathy Rowe about the inclusion of a high school football bleacher replacement project, and the elementary and middle/high school cafeteria areas including floor finishes.
