Plot
Eastwood plays a trucker who picks up money by challenging the toughest men in every area to bare-knuckle bouts. In an earlier match he's won a huge, 11-year-old orangutan (Clyde) that he now travels with. His other driving partner is thick-witted Lewis. They meet Locke, a singer Eastwood falls for. He thinks that the two of them can establish a life together, but she is flighty and departs before a permanent arrangement is established. Determined not to let the woman walk out of his life, Eastwood sets out to catch up with her. Along the way he has a few fights and makes enemies of two lawmen and a rag-tag, Hell's Angels-type motorcycle gang.

Trivia
  • Clint was advised against doing this film by almost everyone. Although panned by the critics, the film and its sequel were his two most successful at the box-office, and are among Warner Bros. top grossing films of all time.
  • Clyde (real name Manis) grabbed Clint while he was driving a truck, worried at not being able to see his trainers. Luckily they managed to calm him down by talking to him over the radio.
  • Warner Bros. released the film in small cinemas at first, as they were pushing Superman in the larger ones - the small towns provided the film's best audiences.
  • Clint's boxing coach was Al Silvani, who used to train Jake LaMotta, and more recently had prepared Sylvester Stallone for Rocky.
