Slow/No Acceleration after Drive Thru (and turning right)

❓Advice / Recomendations

Super random issue been happening more and more and basically what happens is this: my car will be at operating temp for anywhere from 5 min to 30+ min and I’ll stop at a drive thru for food and when I’m leaving and turning right (always when turning right) my 01 has like no acceleration, maybe 5-10% for about 2-5 seconds before it feels like it catches and accelerates normal. Almost feels like a clutch slipping but it’s a auto and it feels like it’s always in gear. It almost feels like when the trac control kicks in in the snow and it decreases power for a couple seconds but no lights indicating trac control (but feels nearly identical). Any help or places to start would be awesome, Possibly TPS? but don’t know how often those realistically go bad. TIA

Yeah, I think you're on track there with suspecting a sensor. I'd also look into your upstream O2 sensor or your knock sensors as they can put your car in limp mode if the readings are off.

My old O2 sensor wouldn't let me go over 50 mph up hill with the pedal mashed to the floor. Swapped it out and drives normal now. Perhaps things like old or failed fuel injectors or dirty/broken MAF could hold you back as well, though I'd expect flashing CELs or similar with the latter issues. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I will chime in. Those are just issues that I've dealt with over the years when faced with similar motor hesitation.

Hey thanks for this, I’ll search into the O2 sensors see if anyone has gotten anything similar, I was also kinda thinking MAF but I don’t feel like MAF’s usually go bad but could be gunked or something. Same with the injector was thinking maybe it’s dumping too much fuel while I’m idling that long and the sensors readings are off? No idea and it’s so hard to replicate lol but thanks man really appreciate the input

This happens to my 248k 2002 limited if I have the AWD engaged. I see the traction control symbol on the instrument cluster blinking. If I turn off AWD, the acceleration returns to normal. I’ve spent my budget on repairs for this year but hopefully I will figure it out before the snow season starts.

it feels nearly identical to when that happens in the snow, except when this happens there's no blinking light. I'm thinking it's some sensor but it's such a weird little issue

pull the TRC MTR relay under the hood to disable trac/vsc and drive for a few days to see if it happens again, that way you'll know if it's for sure a trac/vsc issue

I recently replaced the TPS, drives much better & smoother. No code(s) but it was feeling weird in the winding country rds after installing Motorwest injectors.
