About
San Francisco’s Chinatown is one of the largest Chinese enclaves outside Asia. The best time to visit is during Chinese New Year, when the area comes alive with a grand celebration. Enter through the much-photographed Dragon Gate and take your time to explore the winding back alleys. Don’t miss China Live, a multi-story building filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and a food demonstration hall. Before you leave, stroll down Grant Avenue, the main tourist thoroughfare lined with shops. Restaurants here get really crowded at dinnertime; reservations are highly recommended. – Tripadvisor

As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighborhood decorated with colorful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighborhood.

Be careful of some merchant trying to rip you off with overpriced jewelry (not anyone Chinese fyi). - KelvinDunedin, New Zealand592 contributionsAuthentic……Another really iconic location in San Francisco and we spent a few hours exploring the streets and having a good Chinese meal. Although there were plenty of places that really looked the same and were selling the same stuff, it was still pretty cool being in a pretty authentic China Town. Well worth a bit of time here.Visited May 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten July 4, 2023
- pecanpie2205Essex, United Kingdom1,215 contributionsVibrant and BustlingA visit to Chinatown is a must if you are visiting SF. Chinatown is not very big and the best way to explore is to just wander. Saying that, a guide would be beneficial so you don’t miss anything or even an organised tour. It was very busy when we visited with both locals and tourists. Vibrant and bustling with an energetic vibe. Chinatown is open 24/7 although each shop opening times varied. It is one of SF most visited places and well worth a visit.Visited August 2022Traveled with familyWritten July 9, 2023

- Claudia S20 contributionsgood place to potterWe had a fun morning wandering around Chinatown, looking at the shops and restaurants, the Dragon Gate. Lovely little tea shops, and fun places to pick up cheap presents and souvenirs. Also some very authentic Chinese food shops with all kinds of dried food goods. Don't miss the Jade tea rooms - they do fantastic mango lassi and different drinks.Visited July 2023Traveled with familyWritten July 20, 2023

I am so happy I got to explore the city on my own for a few days. The neighborhood was safe and busy with the hustle and bustle of the normal day. I was able to get lost in the neighborhood and just absorb all of the energy!Visited July 2023Written July 24, 2023
- shy_kittenSaint Louis, Missouri162 contributionsMUST VISIT - rich culture and foodsOur awesome Chinese friend who grew up in San Francisco took us to OLD China Town. Showed us all the shops, best places for dim sum, groceries, new foods and shopping. Introduced us to shops with dried ingredients for making broths "like mom used to make". Be adventurous! We ordered dim sum pieces not found in our home region and tried succulent duck. Our friend showed us the old shops that closed and why. Famous bakery (closed during our visit), famous textiles shop for exclusive fabrics and stores for specialty gowns. Fantastic prices. Our host advised us that haggling is expected culturally, but it didn't feel right considering the quality, affordability, service (suggesting and offering more options, discounts, specials) and friendliness of all the shops and staff. We could have spent more time exploring. We barely saw a fraction of the shops and wares available. Plan several hours-half a day to really appreciate.Visited August 2023Traveled with friendsWritten August 8, 2023
- MLE56 contributionsChinatown is alive and wellWe had heard all sorts of bad things about San Francisco and its homeless problems, but had a few hours to kill before our late afternoon flight home. We drove into the city and walked around a bit, including Chinatown. The sidewalks were clean, we saw only a few homeless people, and Chinatown hasn't changed much in the 50+ years we've been visiting. Lots of the same touristy souvenir stores, shops full of unidentifiable foods and many restaurants, which we unfortunately did not have time to try. Will go back soon!Visited August 2023Traveled as a coupleWritten August 25, 2023
- WaddlerYork, United Kingdom11,229 contributionsWorth exploringWe enjoyed our early morning in Chinatown, though many shops had not yet opened (some open at 11am). We finished with mid-morning dim sum. In the meantime we checked out alleyways, the fortune cookie factory and a couple of playgrounds (Willie Woos being much the better for kids to play as the one in Portsmouth Square is overrun with adults doing exercises and is more urban and less attractive). We enjoyed strolling around and if you continue to California Street you can get classic cable car views down the hill to downtown.Visited August 2023Traveled with familyWritten September 6, 2023

This was back in April 2018, and I'm reviewing this location spur of the moment after looking at some travel pictures of my time in San Fran. I'm from Hong Kong and lived in Mainland China for more than 20 years, which was why I wanted to see what it was like for FOBs when they first arrived to America, and based on what I saw in Chinatown, SF, I am proud to say that living in China is a lot better than living in America... at least for a Chinese person. If this Chinatown was meant to be "home base" for Chinese people living in this city, I can understand why nobody wants to stick around. There was absolutely no sense of vibrance as a quarter of shops were closed, and those that were open didn't seem very welcoming with their staggering prices for food and drinks. Souvenir shops were selling Mao-related stuff and cheap toys that made a lot of noise, which I haven't seen in China since the early 2000's. If I had to compare, I would say this place resembles China back in the 80s minus the lanterns and cheesy signs, and has frozen in time since, which is probably why some people to this day think China is still really backward.
The only people I saw walking up and down the streets were tourists like me. I think most of them were as confused as I was when trying to figure out where the "attraction" really was as they were holding onto their Nikon DSLRs and desperately trying to find a worthy spot to put their camera skills to use.

After 20 month of COVID-19. San Francisco Chinatown is back. On Friday (11/19/21) I ride the Cable Car California Line and got off the at Grant and California St head south on Grant Ave towards Bush St where the Dragon Gate is located. Since I am a Bay Area resident and has been to Chinatown 50+ times, it’s so vibrant and a lots of shops has reopened. The red lamp hangs high really give you feeling that you are in Far East. Chinatown has tall hills where you can the iconic San Francisco downtown, Transamerica and Salesforce Buildings. I also saw Muni #1 California St Bus where Marvel Movie Shangchi were filmed. The dum sim place, restaurant, bakery, souvenir shop, bubble teas and grocery shopping are packed with folks even on Friday afternoon.
Cable Car, Muni bus 1, 8, 30, 45, 91 and new subway station is about to open soon will get you to the heart of Chinatown. This is not just a bucket list to be check off. This is a must see destination is you are coming to San Francisco.

I had a good return trip to Chinatown. This time I went to the art galleries, kite store, wok store, some of the tourist stores. I had lunch at Chinese Restauramt Maggie Cafe.
I went to the store at the Chinese Cultural Center. The art galleries were closed as they were changing exhibits and reopens February 8. I enjoyed seeing the wall murals, going to the parks, and Old St. Mary's Catholic Church. There is always something new and different to see in Chinatown.

Chinatown is a wonderful place for an aimless wander to soak in the sights and sounds of the neighborhood. It's the oldest Chinatown in North America and well worth a visit just for the history, although it's also a bustling, vibrant neighborhood with plenty of delicious places to eat and beautiful, different forms of artwork. It lights up at night with lamps hanging over the streets. Enter through the Dragon Gate, which is worth visiting on its own account. The streets here are steep, as they are in the rest of the city, so be sure to take a break at one of the many eateries. There are a lot of alleyways and side streets to explore as well - don't stick just to the main roads or you'll miss some interesting shops.

If you’ve been to a chime town in any major North American city, then you’ve been here.... Just more rod the same thing in my opinion... good restaurants but a lot of typical Chinese nickel and dime stores selling knickknacks

Many of the stores and restaurants were forced closed by covid-19. So while it may still be a vibrant community for the people who live there, it is a little sad for visitors.
Do read about the history of Chinatown - which is very interesting - online, and consider going there for dinner, But otherwise, there isn't much to see (especially if you are coming from another city which has its own Chinatown.)

My family was there on Father's Day. We had not been for years, and were sorely disappointed. There was a DJ in the middle of the street that was playing music so loud, my youngest son started crying and wanting to leave. My husband was highly irritated because even inside stores you couldn't communicate with sales people. We ordered boba that was expensive and disgusting. There was a group of kids on bikes throwing firecrackers at people. I was hit but unhurt. Thank goodness there are so many fun and enjoyable things to do in SF. We lasted about 30 minutes.

Our taxi driver dropped us off at Chinatown's famous gate which he said was the beginning of where Chinatown starts. We've been here before and that's not quite true. There was something missing here - no tourists. For blocks, we were the only people here. Many souvenir shops were vacant, and we saw only one restaurant opened. When we were window shopping, a salesman came out of his store and tried to sell us a $3000 life sized statue of a cheetah, saying that it was a very good price. Our only purchase was a post card and stamp. If you are a photographer, there are many photo opportunities such as the iconic buildings and murals. Chinatown is not a must see destination like it once was.

One of the oldest & established China Town in USA beyond iconic dragon gate with silk cloth lanterns all along the way.
The bursting streets, glittering shops & eateries are sources of attraction for tourist. Chinese goods & gift items are available in plenty at reasonable rates in this market.
A few famous Chinese restaurants need advance booking of tables.
The monasteries in the township are really famous & worth visiting .

One street where all the locals hang out - very over crowded, ditry and the smells from all the vendors was not very good.
One street over and your in the tourist area. Every shop offers the same crap gifts, you can't shop w/o someone following you around like your a potential shop lifter.
Been there, done it. Never again........

Traveling to SF on 5/11-5/12/18, with my daughter. Planning on Alcatraz tour during the day on Saturday and dinner in China Town Sat evening. 3 questions: 1) Any suggestions for an authentic Chinese restaurant to have Dim Sum? 2) Are reservations recommended? & 3) any safety concerns other than the usual for women travelers in large cities? Thanks!

All the restaurants in China town that we ate it had dim sum. I can't recommend a specific restaurant because we tried so many & all were great. We just walked into each one with no reservations. There were a high volume of police everywhere we looked and we did not feel "unsafe" anywhere we went. Of course this could change with the time of day/which day you are there. Good luck
