Welbeck's 'career has reignited'

Danny Welbeck celebrates

Brighton striker Danny Welbeck is having a "second career" with the Seagulls, says Liverpool striker Natasha Dowie.

Welbeck scored his side's equaliser as they came from behind to beat Chelsea 2-1, external at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live's Football Daily podcast Dowie said: "For a lot of people you'd probably think three, four, five years ago almost like his career was gone. He wasn't scoring goals, yes he was always someone who would work hard and put a shift in for the team but he kind of had fizzled out a bit.

"Now all of a sudden it's like his career has reignited again and he's scoring goals and he's performing well and he's really kind of that number nine. He came on today and scored on his first touch, a really important goal for Brighton and that's nice to see as well.

"It's not just that the team are developing and evolving but also players of old - who were big names back in the day - that maybe have gone missing for a couple of years and are now having almost like a second career. So I think that's really cool to see as well."

Did you know? Both Brighton’s goals against Chelsea were scored by substitutes (Welbeck and Enciso) – indeed, only Man Utd (10) have netted more goals via subs than the Seagulls (8) in the Premier League this season.
