Mrs. Doubtfire is the UK’s favourite comedy movie of all time, according to new national research revealed this week.

The ‘90s classic, which features the late Robin Williams in the title role, took 17% of the vote, beating out competition from British favourite Monty Python and the Holy Grail (14%) and ‘80s disaster film parody Airplane! (13%), according to the nationwide survey carried out by Showcase Cinemas.

The survey was commissioned to mark Blue Monday, and revealed that when feeling down, watching a funny film is among Brit’s favourite activities to cheer themselves up.

Elsewhere, it was another win for legend of the big screen Robin Williams (28%), as he was named the UK’s favourite comedic actor of all time thanks to his roles in Good Morning Vietnam, Jumanji, Mrs. Doubtfire and many more.

Twenty per cent opted for Mr. Bean star Rowan Atkinson, whereas John Cleese (16%), of Monty Python fame rounded off the top three.

In a closely fought race, it was British actress Jennifer Saunders (21%), who lent her voice to animated favourites Shrek 2, Minions and Sing, who was named the number one comedy actress of all time. Whoopi Goldberg followed narrowly behind taking 20% of the vote, with Jennifer Aniston (17%) taking third spot.

In the battle to be named the funniest scene from a comedy film, one of cinema’s most iconic lines came out on top as the “Don’t call me Shirley” (19%) scene from Airplane! finished number one.

Over one in five named Shrek (22%) their favourite animated comedy of all time, while Shrek’s trusty sidekick Donkey (16%) picked up top spot as the nation’s favourite character from a comedy film.

A Showcase Cinemas spokesperson said:
“Blue Monday is known as one of the most depressing days of the year due to the gloomy whether and the post-Christmas slump, so we wanted to do some research into which films cheer people up. There’s nothing better than a good comedy to put a smile on your face and it’s great to see Mrs. Doubtfire named the UK’s favourite of all time.

“Our survey revealed watching a funny film is one of the top things Brits like to do when feeling down, so we’re delighted to be able to play a part in turning people’s frowns upside down.

“There are so many great movies coming up throughout 2023, but our survey discovered the one the UK is most looking forward to is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which lands on the big screen in May”.

What’s more, the survey revealed there is a generation divide when it comes to our favourite comedies, with 18-24-year olds electing Edgar Wright’s Hot Fuzz as their number one.

And it appears the UK is still not out of its Christmas mindset, as Home Alone was named the nation’s favourite comedy franchise of all time.
