Alan Niger III, son of Stephen, claimed the Honour
of Brittany (Richmond) upon his father's death (1137) and was the first
to use the title "Earl of Richmond." |
||
Birth | before 1100 | Alan Niger III was born before 1100 at York, Yorkshire, England.2 |
1136 | Alan III seems to have been recognized as the
first Earl of Richmond by 1136. There is no record of his formal
investiture with the dignity, however. He has also been found as Alain de Penthieve, Earl of Richmond. NOTE: The Richmond family are NOT the same as the Earl of Richmond Family. They are related only thru' marriage. See His title derived from Richmond Castle in North Yorkshire, which his uncle Alan had built not long before dying in 1089 and which remained the caput or administrative centre of the honor (agglomeration of knight's fees in a single unit under the feudal system). Richmond Castle was granted to the 1st Duke of Richmond of the present creation in August 1675, (not this man) the same month he was first ennobled, but the medieval honor comprised lands throughout eastern England, not just in Yorkshire. Earl Alan sided with Stephen against the Empress Maud at the time of the Anarchyl. His son **Conan IV held the Dukedom of Brittany (right to which he enjoyed through his mother, Alan's wife) as well as the Earldom of Richmond.2 |
|
Marriage | Alan Niger III married **Bertha Heiress of Brittany, daughter of Duke **Conan III "le Gross" of Bretagne and Princess Matilda (Maud).2 There may have been two other children of this union, of which little is known. |
|
He may have had a mistress, unidentified, and a son by her, ie. Brian FitzAlan, Lord of Bedale. |
||
Death | 15 Sept 1146 | Alan Niger III died on 15 September 1146 at Begard, Brittany, France.3,2 Alan was buried at Begard Abbey in Begard, France.2 |
