Overall Bethel High School is quite the average public school in Hampton Roads Virginia. There is nothing abysmal about the school itself, however I always tend to feel let down with how the school handles certain situations. Whether it's about our upperclassmen's future or how they discipline the "troubled" students, both of which can use work. I have this feeling of being completely unprepared for life after high school. I had to personally reach out to my guidance counselor about how to get waivers for college applications and SAT/ ACT. I would've also liked if we had an SAT prep class of some sort to help better prepare me for it. And though I have not been personally targeted by the disciplinary system of the school I am a very big advocate for helping those who need it. Giving out 5-10 day suspensions is only harming and not helping anyone. Kids these days suffer from addictions that they shouldn't be having this young, which should lead to help through rehabilitation.
Bethel offers a decent education, but unless you are specifically seeking out certain academies then I recommend considering a better option. Besides our (easily research able) issues with violence, Bethel just seems to be missing a lot of activities and offerings compared to other schools: we have very little events like pep rallies or assemblies that make up the "high school experience", something most students are aware of. Academics are great and we have plenty of options for people SPECIFICALLY GOING AFTER CERTAIN CAREERS such as GHSA or ALPS and it's a great environment considering the models we offer. Besides that you'll find a lot of just "lack" of everything (especially properly stocked facilities). My advice is that you can make the most out of Bethel but it will take a lot of effort on your part. Be extremely committed to your schoolwork and academy, find trustworthy teachers, and don't get sucked into the negativity. Hopefully the promised improvement will be coming soon.
I really enjoyed my time at Bethel High School. The teachers there are extremely caring and motivational. The culture here is amazing, as there are many different groups of students yet they all seem to intertwine seamlessly. The only thing I would really change is the building could use some upgrades, but that's not really a school level decision.
