TEAM Camden cheered home not one, but two big race winners on Saturday during what was a record-breaking turnout in the TCS Mini London Marathon.

There was a real buzz in the air as families and friends showed their support for more than 12,900 youngsters as they took on one-mile or 2.6k courses around St James’s Park.

Under-13s girls, from left: Victoria Zavadsky (12.42) who was 126th out of 154 finishers, Ira Agrawal (12.13) 110th, Chloe Trunkfield (11.00) 47th, Amara Mankodi (11.24) 70th, and Emily Lowe (12.22) 115th

A squad of 33 athletes tackled the bigger of the distances for Camden, starting off at Horse Guards Parade before running alongside the park and then racing past Buckingham Palace towards the finish line on The Mall.

Illias Zghoundi

There was something very familiar about seeing wheelchair racer Illias Zghoundi breaking the ribbon as he won the T53/54 category for the fourth year in a row. The 17-year-old, who lives in West Hampstead, clocked a time of seven minutes, 17 seconds in what was his last-ever Mini London Marathon before ageing out of the competition.

Under-15s boys, from left: Oliver Flemming (8.46) who was 37th out of 160 finishers, Arjuna Pflug (8.12) 9th, Sam Jones (9.24) 85th, Arkady Wyporski (9.08) 59th, and Soren Loynes (10.31) 134th

Looking ahead to a bright future, Illias said: “It was good! It was my last race in the mini, so I thought I might as well go as hard as I can. I really enjoyed it.

Team Camden’s Under-15s girls, from left: Lucia Luptakova (13.09) who was 130th out of 140 finishers, Isabella George (12.41) 123rd, Sofia George (12.58) 127th, Tamara Felix (11.09) 78th, Eloise Lindley (10.56) 70th, and Olive Brungs (11.32) 93rd

“I’m taking part in two half-marathons later this year – the Big Half in London and the Great North Run in Newcastle – and then I’m aiming to compete in full marathons in Berlin and Manchester. And then hopefully, in the near future, I can come back and do the main marathon in London.”

Team Camden’s big celebrations continued with Thomas Chadwick (left) winning the boys’ Under-17s Borough Challenge race after seeing off competition from 126 other young athletes to be crowned the king of the capital with a rapid time of 7.32.

Other highlights for the borough included Arjuna Pflug earning a top-10 finish in the boys’ Under-15s race with his time of 8.12, while Leoni Delvendahl was Camden’s best finisher in the girls’ races after taking 16th place in the Under-17s age category with a time of 9.51.

“It was fantastic to see both Illias and Thomas winning gold in their final races for Camden,” said team manager Ben Dorsett, who works for Camden Council’s Sport and Physical Activity Service. “We’ve watched them develop over the years and it was a great ending to this particular chapter of their journey.”
