Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and state Congress president Partap Singh Bajwa on Saturday expressed grief over the demise of Gurbinder Kaur Brar, 75, wife of late chief minister of Punjab Harcharan Singh Brar.
Gurbinder Kaur Brar passed away at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in Chandigarh on Saturday morning after prolonged illness. In a condolence message, Badal recalled Brar's services as MP in the Lok Sabha and leader of the opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, and said she had worked for women's empowerment and emancipation of downtrodden people.
Bajwa said Brar, elected MP from Faridkot in 1980, belonged to a prominent political family of Punjab and had made a tremendous contribution to the Congress and particularly the people of Malwa. She is survived by daughter-in-law Karan Kaur Brar, Congress legislator from Muktsar.
Gurbinder Kaur's husband, Harcharan Singh Brar, died in 2009. Kanwarjit Singh "Sunny" Brar, former Congress MLA and only son of the Brar couple, had died of cancer last year.
Brar was daughter of Jaswant Singh, brother of late Punjab CM Partap Singh Kairon.
