The independent city of Newport News, Virginia is a coastal town of 120 square miles with a population of around 185,000 people. For a city in such a historic state, Newport News nevertheless is firmly connected with the ever-evolving modern world due in large part to its strong ties to the United States military. It’s not all business in Newport News, however. The Virginia War Museum as well as many notable sites from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars are the main historical attractions in the area. For those looking for a more cultural scene, the Peninsula Fine Arts Center as well as the Ferguson Center for the Arts offer rotating and evolving galleries and performing arts shows for locals to enjoy. Alternatively, the Virginia Living Museum presents visitors with a combination of a native wildlife park, a planetarium, a botanical reserve, an aquarium, and a science museum.
