Raven presents for the first time on CD two original, outstanding albums by BOBBY BARE - Cowboys and Daddys (1975) and Me and McDill (1977). Bare is one of the greats of ""Outlaw"" country, having scored million-selling hits in the 1960s with the likes of '

Way back in 1976 I was deep into rock & roll with a passing interest in country music. Almost by accident I heard "Me & McDill" and was blown away. I had heard Bobby Bare before (Detroit City, Millers Cave) but this album made me a fan. I remember hearing "Look Who I'm Cheating On Tonight" on the radio when it was a hit. I remember thinking that there were so many better songs on the album (which I had bought as soon as I could). Well, like most folks, I don't play my old vinyl much anymore. So I have spent around 30+ years looking and waiting and hoping that this would be reissued on CD. Finally, thank you Raven Records. "Coyboys & Daddys" is a fine album as well, but I would have bought this even if it only included "Me & McDill". Most folks know Bobby Bare because of his funny songs, which are great, but it's also a shame because all of his stuff is great. Anyone who ever dreamed of making it in the music business will identify with "Hillbilly Hell", and most of us have experienced the sentiments of "You Made A Believer Out Of Me." Bobby Bare, like all the greats, has a way of making us feel comfortable while his words sound like our life, or while he tears our heart out. This is a great release and you won't regret buying it. Some of these songs will probably become some of your favorites.

Waylon Jennings described Bobby Bare as the best songhound in the world. Certainly, Bare had an unerring knack for picking good songs and this instinct led to some of the most interesting and eclectic country albums of the sixties and seventies.

This release bring together "Cowboys And Daddys" from 1975 and "Me And McDill" from 1977 on to a single disc and for the first time on CD. The two albums prove Bare's credentials as a songhound and the wonder is that they have been out of print for so long. Just as surprising is that with the exception of two tracks on "Cowboys And Daddys" none of the other 23 tracks have ever featured on any compilation album - the two bonus tracks are the exception.

So, these tracks have been unearthed for the first time in over thirty years by the Australian label, Raven.

"Cowboys And Daddys"is Bare's dedication to 20th century cowboys with great songs written by, among others, Tom T Hall, Shel Silverstein and Ray Wylie Hubbard. True to Bobby's style these songs are full of laconic humour laced with poignancy and delivered in his typically laid back manner and understated performance. The album ends with the plaintive "Last Chance At The Old Texas Moon" by Bob McDill.

This may have been Bobby's cue to commission McDill to write eleven original songs for the album that came to be titled "Me And McDill". If you listen to this album for the first time you might be surprised at how familiar the songs are. That's because the songs are perfectly crafted and Bobby's delivery is so elegant that it is easy to be persuaded that the songs have been around for ever.

Superb and timeless and a reminder that Bobby Bare should be a talent to cherish.

5,0 von 5 Sternen Me & McDill
Rezension aus den Vereinigten Staaten vom 9. Juni 2014
My wife grew up in Beaumont, Texas, near Bob McDill and his family. Bob Mcill wrote the songs on the "Me & McDill" portion of this great double CD. So, we have been very interested in following Bob McDill's musical songwriting career for many years.

One might have thought that Bob's brother,Wayne McDill, not Bob, might have exhibited the more musically talent among the members of the McDill family since Wayne led the music in various church services, etc. But it was Robert or Bobby (later just Bob McDill) who went on to earn the stature of becoming a member of a very select group of American Country song writers. The songs on this CD which were written by Bob McDill help to illustrate Bob McDill's talent and Bobby Bare's faithful rendition of those songs. This CD is worth owning & listening to often.

I suggest performing a brief Internet search for "Songwriter Bob McDill" in Nashville, TN, to learn more about this very talented and humble American songwriter who retired from song writing many years too soon depriving the world of many other songs yet to be written and recorded.

It's the fall of 2011 and Bobby Bare still isn't in the Country Music Hall Of Fame. Though he never quite attained the status of Johnny Cash, his recorded material is comparable to that of the Man In Black. Bobby in his heyday was very versatile, he recorded rockabilly and Bakersfield hillbilly. But his career really took off when he embraced the Nashville folk-country sounds of the 60s. He did one of Nashville earliest concept albums "A Bird Named Yesterday". But then he went on to become a country outlaw. He left RCA in 1970 but returned in '73 with the understanding that he would produce his own material. A great decision which gave birth to such classic albums as "Lullabys, Legends and Lies" and the 2 albums included in this CD. On the first "Cowboys and Daddys", Bobby performs his classic cult song "Up Against The Wall Redneck Mother" and Shel Silverstein's "The Stranger" in which he does some rare yodeling. The second album "Me And McDill" is slightly slicker but just as good. All songs on this one were written by Bob McDill which is similar to earlier albums which contained only Shel Silverstein compositions. There are some really funny songs here like "If You Think I'm Crazy Now" and "Don't Think You're Too Good For Country Music" and a great reverse cheater song "Look Who I am Cheating On Tonight". I do wish Raven Records would have included different bonus tracks in this compilation. The two included are readily available in several current in print CDs. And that is why I'm giving this collection four stars instead of the five which it really deserves. This is a reflection on the reissue label and not the artist. But these two bonus tracks are at the end of the CD and can be readily omitted. All in all a great reissue.
