Blimey. Someone really needs to release theChildren's Film Unit movies as a box set because they’re fascinating - basically Children’s Film Foundation stuff but with actual children making them so any sense of improving nonsense is quickly jettisoned
You can play a fun game with this film of exactly where the mainstream version would go: an emotional learning curve for both the runaway children and their families. In the actual hands of kids? Sod that. One family shows actively no maturation and, if anything, actually starts regressing as the movie goes on. There are weird throwaway lines about AIDS that seem to neither be serious points or blackly comic gags - instead they demonstrate pretty much how your average teenager…
the professional, guiding hand of the adult filmmakers was a little too present in the last Children’s Film Unit project I saw (“Daemon”) but they clearly let the kids run wild with the story and dialogue here. no adult could have made this?
a road movie where two runaway kids steal a Ferrari, crash a party, go on police chases, and express their mutual crush by being mean to each other. super angsty, super goofy, surprisingly dark, mostly amoral. by the end of the movie, nobody learns a single thing. perfect
Two teenagers go on an impromptu in a 1955 Fwrrari to Brighton. They go on to decide to live off the land. There is just one good bit where they visit someone's house and aa soon as the parents go out, mass underage drinking starts as the teens attack the parents' stock of liquor. So slow, I watched it on 1.75x speed.
i absolutely loved this film. you can really feel the kids decisions reverberating through the film, rather than what i feel happens with a lot of “kids in charge” art- where you can feel the adults guiding the hands. this felt authentically like kids guiding the film, and in that, their worldview replicated, creating the environment where i could walk in their shoes, authentically. lots of media is representative of children in patronizing and objectifying ways. i am of the belief that children really are oppressed individuals in many situations, creating a dynamic hard for them when transitioning to adult hood. in this film, the children felt honored in their ACTUAL place in life, their innocence as well as their…
Truly bizarre, pretty much a stream of consciousness of a story, with some oddly creepy moments between the kids. Also, come on, you get Jack May in your film, you use him for more than one weird dream sequence; Igor deserves more!
