  1. 'Secure futures of four key players' - thoughts on Slot's prioritiespublished at 15:50 23 May

    Your views image

We asked for your views on what should be first on Arne Slot's to-do list after replacing Jurgen Klopp as Liverpool manager.

Here are some of your responses:

Rick: Slot and FSG need to extend the contracts of Virgil van Dijk and Trent Alexander-Arnold and, if possible, Mohamed Salah, but if he won't sign an extension, then they need to sell and use the profit on an attacking right-winger. We need depth at centre-back and probably an understudy at right-back if Alexander-Arnold moves to midfield.

Mark: 1. Get Trent to sign a new contract. 2. Sell Mo to pay for Trent's new contract. 3. Sign a new striker.

Will: Replace Darwin Nunez with a player who will not only score goals but also let Salah return to his former role closer to goal. Figure out where Trent wants to play. Bring in a strong left-sided centre-back who can eventually replace Van Dijk. The rest is peachy - we just need players to stay fit and keep developing.

Ken: Slot's first point of business will be to secure the futures of Van Dijk, Alexander-Arnold, Salah and Alisson to avoid unnecessary conjecture. A dynamic defensive midfielder such as Ederson at Atalanta will be required along with a few smart additions to the squad.

Jim: Slot needs to make us more difficult to play against so a top central defender and tough defensive midfielder are top priority along with a more clinical striker to convert more of the many chances we make into goals. Subject to the current players who might leave, Slot should go for three new signings and renewing team spirit.

Rob: Liverpool need a solid, boring, defensive midfielder who can play the majority of games with Wataru Endo as back up. Up front we need to find a way to get 30 games a season out of Diogo Jota - otherwise we need to bring in a finisher. Unfortunately Nunez and Luis Diaz can’t be relied on to put away the big chances in a tight game. No idea what to do with Salah or Alexander-Arnold.

  2. Expert season review: 'An emotional finale'published at 13:04 23 May

    Ian Kennedy
    BBC Radio Merseyside reporter

    Expert view banner

With Liverpool the expectations are always sky high, and so a title challenge is expected, and up until the closing weeks of the season, they were right in the mix.

There's slight disappointment they lost ground, but with a third place finish, 82 points and a Carabao Cup victory, the season can be definitely viewed as one of success, progress and development. Qualification for the Champions League puts the club back among the elite of Europe and will give the new manager a strong platform to work from.

Biggest success for club this season?

Jurgen Klopp was always good at giving youth its chance, and this past season was no exception. Conor Bradley and Jarell Quansah in particular have been superb and will be a big part of the new era, and Harvey Elliott will be pushing for regular starts from now on.

    Biggest let down or frustration?

I suppose the biggest disappointment was the day Klopp announced he was leaving! There’ll be a frustration that too many goals were conceded in the final games of the campaign, and that vital points were lost but overall it was a good season with an emotional finale.

Key item on the summer agenda?

Arne Slot has the unenviable task of replacing Klopp, and how he goes about that will be fascinating. Will he want to add players to the squad? And where would those additions fit in assuming no major departures? Finding a place for Conor Bradley and thus accommodating Trent Alexander-Arnold in midfield is something many have discussed. But overall it’s a fresh start with a new manager and a new backroom staff. If that transition is seamless, Slot will have a great chance to be successful and put his own stamp on things.

"The Premier League signing of the summer at just £35m and perhaps Liverpool's most consistent performer over the course of the season. It looked as though his goals and contributions were going to almost single-handedly drag his team to more major honours before the wheels came off."

  4. The verdict on Liverpool's seasonpublished at 13:23 22 May

Liverpool finished the Premier League season in third and with another Carabao Cup in their trophy cabinet. Yet the biggest headline was the departure of long-serving manager Jurgen Klopp.

Jordan Chamberlain, from Empire of the Kop, external, has given his verdict on the 2023-24 season.

Season rating: 7/10. Imagine winning the title with Jurgen Klopp on his final day at Liverpool. Just a month or so back, the Reds were the Premier League favourites. The fairytale ending was not meant to be and ultimately it fizzled out into a third-place finish and the Carabao Cup. However, we would have taken this at the start of the season.

Happy with your manager? Every Liverpool fan will always love Jurgen. The best manager of my lifetime. I am biased, but I consider him the best football manager on the planet this past decade for how he has competed with Manchester City and their financial advantages. Arne Slot is taking his place. There have never been bigger boots to fill. Good luck, mate.

Unsung hero: Wataru Endo. Mocked upon arrival, the Japanese fought valiantly all season, even though he is of a slightly-below-elite level. His performance in the League Cup final and at home to Manchester City was warrior-like.

Player you would most like to sign: We need a proper defensive midfielder. Sadly, the best one on the market last summer, Declan Rice, went to Arsenal. This was a mistake. Now, new football CEO Michael Edwards needs to get creative. Maybe Manuel Ugarte from Paris St-Germain.

Best away fans: Crystal Palace. Always Palace. One of the few sets of fans who do not sing about poverty and attempt to goad Anfield by signing the national anthem. Since when did that become a thing?

Uncapped Liverpool teenager Ben Doak is a shock inclusion in Steve Clarke’s provisional Scotland squad for Euro 2024.

The 18-year-old forward is yet to start a Premier League match and has recently resumed training after a knee operation in December.

He made three Europa League starts and one in the Carabao Cup in the early part of the season, along with a cameo on the opening day of the Premier League campaign.

Doak, who will travel with Reds defender Andy Robertson, has two goals in six Under-21 outings for his country.

The 28-man list must be trimmed to 26 by 7 June.

  8. 'Klopp has given Liverpool their pride and identity back'published at 09:56 22 May

It is finally the right time to say farewell to Jurgen Klopp. The Kop serenaded him out of the club - before, during and after the win over Wolves on Sunday - with a deserved and continuous emotional display of gratitude.

It is incredible to consider how few people think he is making a mistake by walking out on a huge club while he is still loved and there is a good, young squad in the making and the team not too far off the top.

The reality is that the effort needed to not only manage a top-flight club, but to stay competitive with the Manchester City machine, can destroy you.

Jurgen has regenerated a fading club and given them their pride and identity back, as well as some phenomenal memories to take forward.

Only time will tell where he sits in the pantheon of those Liverpool greats such as Bill Shankly and Kenny Dalglish - and some other non-Scottish guys!

Jurgen won everything for Liverpool and he managed this in the great Manchester City era, which deserves special praise.

More important than any of the great days and nights, however, is that he became a reflection of how the Liverpool fans saw themselves.

Not many managers get to leave before that beautiful relationship turns sour, and Jurgen did not deserve that to happen after all he brought to Liverpool.

Viel Gluck and auf Wiedersehen, Jurgen. Whatever you do next, even a former Everton player can see how much you brought to football in the area.

  9. 'Klopp farewell was too formal'published at 18:08 21 May

    Jordan Chamberlain
    Fan writer

    Liverpool fan's voice graphic

It is sad to say, but Jurgen Klopp's overly organised send-off party felt a little like a corporate event on Sunday.

The manager's best moments with the crowd are spontaneous. They are natural and real, but the drawn out process of clapping every other staff member almost made it feel like an awards evening.

It was too long. It was too formal. It was a little, if I am being honest, boring.

Klopp's speech was decent, however, and it showed a touch of class in that he started a chant for incoming boss Arne Slot. The Dutchman has truly enormous boots to fill.

The best bit, though, was the last five minutes of the game.

Liverpool kept the ball at will while the entire stadium sang "I'm so glad that Jurgen is a Red" on repeat, getting gradually louder and faster as full-time approached.

Klopp has changed the lives of so many Liverpool fans.

His impact on the city cannot be explained in trophies alone. And judging him by that metric would be overly simplistic and unromantic - two things he is definitely not.

There are a plethora of young, hungry players for Slot to improve. Klopp has left him some quite brilliant foundations.

  11. 'Slot's biggest development was made with Feyenoord's young players'published at 16:01 21 May

Dutch football journalist Marcel van der Kraan joined BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club to discuss new Liverpool boss Arne Slot's legacy at Feyenoord:

"Funnily enough this is the only club in the Netherlands - Feyenoord of Rotterdam - where You'll Never Walk Alone is their anthem for all the big games.

"He couldn't have picked a better club. There is a lot of red in the shirt of Feyenoord and the banners in the stadium are all red.

"Arne Slot was really, really emotional on Sunday with everything the fans did for him.

"The biggest development was made with the young players who came from the academy.

"He had about five of them in the team he guided to the Europa Conference League final."

"It's not just Liverpool fans who will miss Jurgen Klop - it's football fans everywhere.

"What he's bought to the Premier League, the style of football, the excitement and the trophies. I think this is such a difficult job [to follow Klopp].

"Liverpool fans are a patient fanbase and I think he [Slot] will be given time but there will always be a certain level of expectation.

"They are well set up but next season will be about stabilising. At some time in the near future, Liverpool fans will expect to really push Manchester City again."

  15. Does Gomez deserve a place in Southgate's squad?published at 11:08 21 May

    Phil McNulty banner
    Joe GomezImage source, Getty Images

BBC Sport's chief football writer Phil McNulty has been answering questions about England's squad for Euro 2024 before Gareth Southgate announces his provisional 30-man group at 14:00 BST on Tuesday.

Tony C asked: Given the question marks on form and fitness throughout the squad, I would have thought a versatile player such as Joe Gomez would be a shoo-in given his excellent overall form for Liverpool, playing in every position across the back four and a couple of games in midfield. Thoughts?

Phil answered: I think he should be under serious consideration for that very reason, Tony, especially with questions marks over form and fitness for players who might figure at left-back such as Luke Shaw, Ben Chilwell and Kieran Trippier. A versatile, adaptable player always gives a manager extra options at a major tournament.

  17. Will data match results?published at 20:04 20 May

    Mandeep Sanghera

    Arne SlotImage source, Getty Images

The Arne Slot era will officially start on 1 June and he will arrive after a thorough recruitment process held by the Reds.

Liverpool’s research, which included looking at data and character among other markers, resulted in Slot emerging as their preferred candidate.

His record with Alkmaar and Feyenoord pointed to a manager able to over-perform compared with the resources at his disposal, an impressive record for developing players and a style of football Liverpool think suits their squad.

Klopp was renowned for his ‘heavy metal’ game and the Reds believe Slot will bring a dynamic, high energy and possession based football to the club.

He has also been given the title of head coach rather than manager in a move that the Anfield club believe reflects the modern game and works better from a structural perspective.

Slot has a hard act to follow in Klopp and we will find out next season if the data matches up with results and performances on the pitch.
