West High School Reviews

The school is very organized and provides direct means of contact for parents and students to teachers. The principal sends out a regular weekly message. All safety concerns and alerts are sent to parents immediately. The school facility has controlled security access with ability to lockdown if needed. Police are closely involved with the school. Several sports and cultural activities are organized. Parent involvement is highly encouraged.
I only feel that the facilities are quite old and dated and need to have a big refresh.

West High is a school dedicated to readiness for the outside world. The academics were, for the most part, challenging. There was a good mix of academic and interests. Although, some interest classes were taken away like Choir and fashion. The teachers were very fun and I enjoyed most, if not all, of their classes. It would be nice to have a better school community as I feel like some decisions made by the upper administrators were not favored by the students. We question some of the political announcements and the removal of classes and school bonding.
It has been speculated by residents of Torrance to be the most academic school of the four major schools in the city. I have been to both North and West, and have also concluded West to be superior in academics, but with a culture of high-achieving students that almost take it too far. There is a lot of involvement in sports and clubs, but funding goes to certain groups more than others. The food isn't the best, but it's high school so it's expected to be mediocre. The modern societal expectations for success is really what creates the suspenseful environment of high achieving students being overly competitive, but it's overall a great school.
The school have a lot of opportunities for the student to explore. They always have different opening they can choose from. They have school organization and the guidance counselor to help them decide in whatever aspect in like they want to consider to study.
My experience throughout my years of attendance has overall been pleasant. I have grown to love many of my former teachers and made countless friends and memories to look back on in the future. As for education and staff, everyone is there to help you succeed. I have only good comments in regard to most of my teachers, especially those who actively pursued students-- including myself-- in and out of class to ensure they were keeping up and learning. There have been many activities on and off campus that were fun to attend. Athletics and visual arts were also offered significant support from the students and faculty alike. The spirits at the school were great, though at times they could have been higher. In general, everything was great but slightly more school-wide effort into all aspects would have made things excellent.
West High is really a place of ups and downs. Staff doesn't always take the greatest care of items, and athletic directors mainly focus on one sport and trash talk every other sport. Academics is the main point of knowledge within the school, as staff focus more on the education of those around.
My overall experience at West High School was fairly good. Considering my freshman year was half online and half in-person, I believe that facilities, teachers, and courses were good. However, there were some things that I was unable to catch up on as some teachers did not give us an adequate amount of time and teaching instructions on what we had to do - leading to me being unable to keep track and catch up in class. Some of my bad grades are a result of those classes being either not understandable or the teacher not giving me enough information during class times.
West High School has been a great opportunity for me socially. Coming from a private school which I had been since preschool, West high was a culture shock when it came to diversity and expanding my social skills. I have met amazing people who have opened my eyes to new ideas, beliefs, and customs which I would have never experienced if I had stayed in my private bubble. This school had a big impact on my life and my future as it has given me an amazing education with little to no bumps along the path in my high school experience.
Not necessarily the worst but the hardest part of my experience was adapting to this huge school with many different cultures. I had to learn to be open minded. I was learning about different religions, cultures, and backgrounds. Learning these concepts helped me to grow and understand the world and its people. Adapting to a new environment wasn't the easiest experience, however, was most necessary and I am proud in my decision of going to West High School.

My son has been at West for 3 years. There are many opportunities to take different courses at the school from regular to APs. There is also a variety of electives to choose from. Teachers are willing to help students. I like that there are a variety of clubs to choose from in order to be more involved at the school. And there are some sports that you don't have to try out for. So there is an opportunity for all to be a bit more involved in the culture of the school. They also have an amazing theater program.
West high is a really good school. The teachers are really nice and the diversity is great. Sports are really fun.
I first started going to West High School sophmore year and it has been great. It has challenged me in many of my classes and was a much higher level then my other high school was. I have met some great people such as teachers and friends and I have had plenty of fun. I was scared when I first came here and even tho it took me a while to find people to hang out with I am glad West has taught me to come out of my comfort zone and has taught me to enjoy life.
My time at west was very interesting, staff where at times the nicest or meanest people I've ever met. The only thing u can say is just be nice to staff and they most likey will receptate
I gave West 3 stars because in most categories there are good aspects and bad aspects. For starters academics, I have found that honors/ap classes are extremely hard while regular-level classes are terribly easy. There was rarely a medium where I felt challenged yet wasn't struggling to pass a class. There are some amazing teachers that completely changed my life and there were also some that made me dread going to school, and I also felt that the school rarely listens to students and their concerns. I will say West has an amazing entertainment unit with WADAAM and Play Production. As someone who is going through the college admission process I do not feel as though I was well prepared and this may because during my time at west there have been 3 different college and career coordinators. There are defiantly schools worse than Westm however, there is work that needs to be done.
West is a great school for academics and has a lot of really great teachers! It is very diverse and has amazing programs for the arts as well. The only thing I would complain about is the distribution of funding, as some sports and events receive much more than others.
I love the environment West High School provides for students from 9-12th grade. When I transferred to this school, I met so many warm-hearted, caring, trustworthy people and I was already glad that I came to this school. Besides the students, the teachers are also passionate about teaching students their classes. Whenever I am stuck on a problem, my teachers are always there to help me out and I find that very relieving. Moreover, our school has a beautiful library that supplies new, interesting books from all genres. Another unique center that West High provides is the Wellness Center. This center is a place where students can communicate with physical therapists/counselors/teachers who have difficulties managing stress or a healthy mental state. Lastly, West High includes so many clubs such as volunteer/service clubs, to multiple cultural clubs. I am so grateful for all the things West High supplies for students.
Teachers are hit-or-miss. They could either teach well or don't teach well. Honors/AP teachers are definitely motivated and will welcome to help you. Definitely feels safe and there's racial diversity. Clubs could be better, but they're relatively good.
I have been going to West High for my whole 4 years of high school. West high l’s academic and sports exceed the expectations of a school. The involvement between teachers and interactions with students are extremely admiring, and it makes the school an overall great school.
West High School is a very academically focused school that also excels in its different sports divisions. WHS is composed of hard-working staff who care for their students and the campus itself is very lovely and large, as well as clean.
Students have many opportunities to meet new people not just in classrooms but in school activities. Almost all of campus is open to everyone and students have fun conversing with teachers about school and life in general.
West High has been helpful for learning academic skills. It's prepared me well for math, science, and writing in college.
