Secrets of the I Ching is the debut album from the American alternative pop-rock group, 10,000 Maniacs. It was recorded between March and July, 1983, and was released within the same year, on the band’s own label, Christian Burial Music.
According to The Rough Guide to Rock, the album was recorded at SUNY Fredonia, and was the first project to feature percussionist Jerome Augustyniak. Upon its initial release (as well as retrospectively) Secrets of the I Ching was met with mediocre to unfavorable press.
Despite the negative reviews, 10,000 Maniacs continued to make more music, and in 1985, the band had released The Wishing Chair, which houses several re-recordings. In 1990, every song on the album was remastered, remixed, and re-released on the compilation album, Hope Chest.
