Roughly 100,000 British and German troops were involved in the unofficial cessations of hostility along the Western Front. The first truce started on Christmas Eve 1914, when German troops decorated the area around their trenches in the region of Ypres, Belgium and particularly in Saint-Yvon. The Germans placed candles on their trenches and on Christmas trees, then continued the celebration by singing Christmas carols. The British responded by singing carols of their own.
Leicestershire Heartsafe Schools Programme
An extremely successful launch event was held at the Leicester Tigers Rugby Football Club ground on 28th February 2012. Forty-two schools were represented, each sending two year 10 pupils (designated ‘Heartsafe Ambassadors’) and at least one teacher. Local dignitaries, sports celebrities and representatives from partner organisations also attended and the event was well supported by industry partners, including Laerdal, Philips, Boston Scientific, Medtronic, St Jude Medical and Sorin Group.
