Room at the Top

Room at the Top is, and has been for a long time, one of my favourite films from the 60s. I’ve watched it a number of times over the years and always enjoyed it. The film does, however, have a few flaws and although I’d rate it highly, I do actually prefer the sequel, Life at the Top, made six years later in 1965.
Where Room at the Top captures Joe Lampton’s (Laurence Harvey) rise to the top, Life at the Top, ten years in the future, shows an unhappy Lampton, trying to recapture some of his earlier heights, which involves some new womanising, as he attempts to make a go of things on his own and move to the city.
There is a part in Life at the Top when Lampton finds himself trying to secure employment, only to be held back by his lack of formal qualifications and background. It’s a revelatory scene, showing the class system for what it is, with Lampton, even after marrying the boss’s daughter, on the outside again. Lampton, though, was never really an insider.
For me, the greater realism in Life at the Top makes it the better of the two films. Even so, both films deserve 5 stars.
I hope you find my review helpful.

Movie is fine; not the commentary
I had already seen the film, and bought this for the commentary. I was very interested to know the details of the screenplay, its adaptation from the book, development of the characters, and cinematography. For this film especially, this could have been very interesting. However, there is almost nothing about any of this in the commentary, so if this is why you are purchasing the Criterion version, you are wasting your money. The commentator delves into all the gossip of the times about the actors, all the sex scandals, and all the other movies of the same genre (New Wave of British Films), how it compares with American films, etc., but never gets down to anything directorial. It is remarkably sad and uninteresting all the ways that actors betrayed their spouses and disgraced themselves, once they are dead and the movie was made before you were born. The work of art lives on and is worthy of critique; but you don't hear much about that in this commentary. Furthermore, I find her voice extremely unpleasant--a heavy British accent, but highly grating.
