Carole King – Rhymes & Reasons

Probably my favorite Carole King album after TAPESTRY, this one feels a more downbeat, but it plays really well as a cohesive record. Bonus: No James Taylor guest appearances! Highlights include "Been To Canaan", "Come Down Easy", "The First Day In August" and "Goodbye Don't Mean I'm Gone". This pressing sounds fine, with ample low end, crisp percussion, and King's piano has a very warm, rich tone. My copy plays nice and clean, with a bit of faint surface noise audible at the beginning of each side.

Just repeating the info that people expressed over in the comments section for her album Writer. I and another person were saying Writer is possibly her best collection of songs, followed by this collection, and then third is Tapestry. (Also check out her album done under the moniker The City) Plus who hasn't heard the songs from Tapestry a million times. Write and Rhymes and Reasons have first rate stuff. The only caveat is that if you put a collection together of 30 songs she wrote as a songwriter with her husband (commonly referred to as Goffin/King) before her solo career, that is superior to anything. There's a reason the Beatles covered two Goffin/King songs early in their career. (Chains on an early album and Keep Your Hands Off My Baby - for a BBC session). There's quite a few collections of Goffin / King songs, but most are CD's. There are two on record. I have one and the quality if okay but the collection of songs is great. If you don't know all the songs she wrote, you'll be blown away. She was making bank before her solo career. And her 1st husband, Gerry Goffin, wrote all the lyrics. (Yes a man wrote "You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman" and so many other love songs like "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow") She didn't start writing any lyrics until the mid 1970's. But her melodies and arrangements are just amazing. So many great song. The Locomotion, One Fine Day, Up On The Roof, No Easy Way Down, Chains, I'm Into Something Good, Some Kind of Wonderful, Hi-De-Ho, Don't Say Nothing Bad About My Baby, Pleasant Valley Sunday, Take a Giant Step, The Porpoise Song, Wasn't Born to Follow, Going Back. You'd know them if you heard them. One of the great song writing teams. And she released an album of all Goffin/King songs called Pearls in the late 1970.
