you can always trust michael sheen to put his whole sheenussy into the weirdest roles ever
I like Michael Sheen, time travel movies, movies set on trains and Christmas.
Despite that - this was rotten.
Props to the director for a a good stab at recreating the time periods from a filmmaking point of view. Sheen is always good. But this is like some weird Black Mirror reject.
Also the SKY EPG says this is 90 minutes long. Reader it is not. It’s 2 hours and feels 3. I paused it at one point to check how long was left and unleashed a blood curdling howl of pain.
does a movie have to be understandable? is it not enough to have michael sheen deliver masterful acting?
I once got a train from London to Edinburgh that took almost 6hrs and that didn't feel as long as this film.
I don't get any of this!
Okay, I admit it was very clever how they used old cameras from past decades to give the screening for each scene authentic vintage looks.
That said, besides all that, the storyline itself is a confusing mess. Doesn't do justice for Michael Sheen and Cary Elwes.

This movie really shouldn’t work but by the end I had all the feels. Once again Michael Sheen is the master of knowing exactly what movie he is in and how to play it. On paper it’s just Sliding Doors meets A Christmas Carol but a clever concept, a very well rounded script and of course Michael Sheen elevate it beyond that.
Also of note, I don’t think I’ve ever seen so many absolutely insane wigs in one movie. The sheer volume/variety of them is actually astounding. And this is coming from someone who just recently watched the entire Twilight Saga.
This feels like a film where the idea was better than the execution. There are moments that really work, others that don't work so well. Still, a little bit of inventiveness goes a long way when it comes to Christmas movies. And Michael Sheen is clearly having a good time playing all the different versions of the character.
An absolute mess of a story that often feels like it's taking forever to coherently tell. The gimmicky nature of the different filming styles for each era is a nice idea and well executed, but not even Michael Sheen and a silly Cary Elwes turn inject much in the way of festive joy. It's actually a really downbeat film whose poster is a massive lie - there's barely a smile in it.
