It’s been an emotional couple of weeks for tennis royalty, as Roger Federer announced his retirement as a professional player on Thursday, Sept. 15– just a couple of weeks after Serena Williams retired following this year’s U.S. Open.

Federer, 41, made the announcement in a video tweet addressed to his “tennis family and beyond,” thus wrapping up a legendary career in which he won 20 Grand Slam singles titles and 103 ATP tour singles titles overall. Although the Swiss star has no plans to play in any future ATP matches, he will play in the Laver Cup, a team competition in London that kicks off Friday, Sept. 23.

Becoming the world’s most bankable men’s tennis player doesn’t come without talent — in addition to his 103 singles titles and 20 Grand Slam titles, Federer was ranked No. 1 in the world for 310 weeks and notched a record six victories in the season-ending ATP Tour finals. He won a record eight Wimbledon men’s singles titles, along with six championships at the Australian Open, five at the U.S. Open and one at the French Open. He first reached No. 1 in the world in 2002 and earned his first Grand Slam title a year later at Wimbledon.

Federer earned more than $1 billion during his 23-year career, MarketWatch reported — about $130 million on the court, and more than $870 million off of it through endorsements. As Forbes noted, the Swiss star has signed long-term endorsement deals with over a dozen brands, including Credit Suisse, Lindt, Mercedes and Rolex. In 2018 he left Nike — which paid him about $150 million over the course of two decades — to ink an apparel deal with Uniqlo reportedly worth up to $300 million over 10 years. Federer also commanded $2 million per event just to play in exhibitions and smaller tournaments.

Roger Federer Personal Life

Federer has been married to his wife Mirka (a former tennis player herself) since 2009. The couple have four children — twin girls Myla and Charlene and twin boys Leo and Lenny. The family has a home in Switzerland along the shores of Lake Zurich as well as in Dubai, where they own a penthouse apartment. They also have properties in the Swiss Alps and South Africa.
