Bob was my second Scoutmaster in Troop 51 in Chicago and awarded my Eagle. He had the vision to inspire a "Boy run" troop that is the best example of it I have encountered in 40 years. He set a goal of us going on solo troop high adventure summer camp trips to the Ely, Minnesota 10000 Lakes region that provided a focus which were great fun but really were a tool and vehicle for our development and growth as men and citizens. He retained older scouts including my friends and myself to lead the younger scouts, and he persuaded the parents to provide vital supervision, technical, and financial support in a non-intrusive way.
On a personal level, he advised me not to accelerate my college career and instead take the time to get a CO-OP job. (During the War, he had to do the opposite and he felt the acceleration short-changed him). That job gave me practical experience as I was learning engineering and that mix has proven to be one of the most important, positive decisions that I have ever made in my life. He also provided other career advice based on his perspective as a "headhunter" for engineers.
Bob sought to execute each endeavor in a thorough manner with flair and style. With Bob, there was no try, either do or don't do something, and do it well. A manifestation of this philosophy was in his purchases which were always first class. I learned from Bob that you only complain about the cost of excellent quality once, when you make the purchase--you will regret bad quality acquisitions many times over.
Bob was a practical realist who understood the past but looked to the future and adapted very well to chance. He had many phases or periods in his life and he affected many people. He certainly was a major influence in my life, even though we interacted only about six years. I am very glad that I visited him with my wife and sons (who recently became Eagle Scouts) about five years ago. The legacies of those he touched will continue.
My condolences to his large family.
