  • She also spoke about her body image issues and called herself the harshest critic of her appearance.

Mouni Roy, who will soon be seen in Karan Johar’s ‘Showtime’, recently interacted with IndiaToday.in and opened up about her inhibitions and struggles on her silver screen journey in her 17-year-long career. Mouni, who started her acting career as a television actor and gained heightened popularity with Ekta Kapoor’s ‘Naagin’, left television to transition to the silver screen and made her debut alongside Akshay Kumar in ‘Gold’. Acknowledging that Mouni was the highest paid television actor when she quit, she added, “Television has given me everything. I am what I am today because of TV, and I’m always going to be grateful for that. At the time I decided to be a part of films, I felt if I didn’t do it now then when. The transition for me was very organic and in ‘Gold’, I was playing a Bengali, which I am in real life. So, I did fit the part and continued doing projects that came my way. It was a mix of both, my destiny and hard work that I’m where I am today.” Speaking of overcoming rejections, Mouni shares, “There have been times when I have auditioned for a part, walking out thinking that I have done a great job, killed the look test as well and was shortlisted in the top two aiming for the role, and eventually I haven't landed the part. Sometimes, it wasn’t even for the right reasons. But, I have understood that this industry is like this – you take it with a pinch of salt and move on. I’m eternally grateful that I wake up every day, and I’m lucky to do what I love to do.” In an industry, where vanity is often given too much importance, Mouni is one of the few actors who have also been in the news for her beauty and fashion sense. Speaking of coping and balancing body image and self-worth, Mouni shared, “My friends know this very well, but this is probably the first time I’m saying this on record – I don’t consider myself conventionally pretty or attractive-looking. I used to struggle with these thoughts. I’m not discounting myself on anything, but for the longest time, I have been the harshest critic or judge of how I looked and this has been one of the biggest truths of my life. But, as I moved on into my spiritual journey, meditation helped me with self acceptance and self love and that’s something that has really helped me.”
