Castle is an eight-season series that follows Richard Castle (Nathan Fillion), a best-selling mystery novelist, and Kate Beckett (Stana Katic), a homicide detective, as they work together to solve strange crimes in New York state. Beyond the interesting cases Castle and Beckett investigate throughout the series, what really holds the show together is the relationship between the two initially mismatched partners, which eventually grows into a romance.

The show ended in 2016, and the cast of Castle moved on to various projects after the final season. In that last season, Castle and Beckett discover that the person behind a large criminal conspiracy is none other than Mason Wood (Gerald McRaney), the head of the Greatest Detective Society and a former CIA analyst. Going under the code name "LokSat", Wood has a vast web of spies, confidants, and allies who are personally invested in stopping Castle and Becket. One of these allies, Caleb Brown (Kristoffer Polaha), dies twice in the show.

Though one of the most beloved crime procedurals of its time, rewatching Castle today reveals the issues and drama both on and off-screen.

Caleb Brown's Fake Death In Castle Explained

Caleb Brown is one of LokSat's many gunmen and a loyal follower – or so it seems. LokSat, who, up until the finale, has been an unknown character, is revealed to be Mason Wood, the architect behind "The Beckett Conspiracy". This arc took up the first six seasons of Castle and involved the murder of Kate's mother. The high-profile criminal employed Caleb at some point, but the character only first appeared in season 8, episode 8, "Mr. and Mrs. Castle". He is a defense attorney who is known to have connections to LokSat, and embarrasses Castle in court.

Later in the season, Beckett convinces Caleb to turn on LokSat and help her capture the villain after everything he's done. Caleb agrees and gives her a phone that will help identify LokSat. However, when Caleb's body is found burned in the trunk of a car, Beckett and Castle realize they've been set up, and their meeting location becomes a shootout.

Without their one ally, Beckett and Castle are trapped until Mason shows up to save them. It's only too late they realize that he is in fact LokSat, and he captures them with the intent of torturing them to find out everything they know.

Caleb Is Revealed To Be Alive — Only To Be Shot Dead By Beckett

For the rest of the finale, it seems that Caleb is dead, and Castle and Beckett are sorry to have lost an ally. However, after they escape from Mason and put him in jail for his crimes, they return home only for Caleb to come bursting through their door. Caleb shoots Castle and Beckett, but not before Beckett manages to kill him. Caleb had only faked his death and was always working with LokSat, which explains why Mason was so easily able to find them during the shootout.

Though Beckett and Castle seem badly injured, the finale jumps seven years into the future to reveal they survived and now have a family. For much of Castle, it was never totally sure if Castle and Beckett's romance would end with them together, and even after they're married, it was always a question of whether they would both survive. The Castle finale provides a heart-warming and fan-pleasing end that shows not only the pair living but starting a family together. Castle was never an overly grim show, so for it to end optimistically matches the tone of the series.
