Parent: Bronx Science is a lovely school with a challenging curriculum. It has brought out the best in my child as the students are encouraged to be well-rounded with the offering of many clubs and activities. The most challenging part is the sense of competition between the students, however, there are many of the students who support each other and it is not as much of a "pressure cooker" as other schools. I am glad we chose the school and I would send my other child there without hesitation. One other positive about the school is that my child has met many students from different boroughs of the city and different backgrounds. Senior: Deciding to attend Townsend Harris was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. For starters, the community here is very welcoming, whether it be teachers, students, or admin. Spend a day here and you will see a multitude of friendly interactions between students and teachers in the halls (dapping teachers up, to yelling each others’ names and saying hi in the halls) Another aspect I appreciate is this school’s active student body. There are several major student-led events that occur throughout the year, and virtually all students participate it in. FON and S!NG are the major events, and during these times, almost the entirety of the student population comes together to put together the productions. The school is always bustling after school, and most people stay late to participate in clubs, attend FON or S!NG rehearsals, or simply hang out in the halls. Parent: Stuyvesant represents a solid experience in the public school system. Many people are proud and happy to be here, across varied positions, teachers, administrators, staff, counseling etc. A huge school that manages to foster a sense of community! The students are very competitive with themselves, but for the most part very supportive of each other. Any student can find their passion and their people here, but they need to look and be involved. Fosters independence; diverse socioeconomically; many interesting perspectives; academic rigor; incredible resources; excellent facilities. That being said, not for every student; still need to deal with DOE bureaucracy in a big place; a couple of teachers have checked out or can’t teach; mental health is not the best here. Aside from that overall, Stuyvesant is pretty much what you see is what you get. Lots of pressure junior year. Heavy workload. Little sleep. Senior: Bard High School's early college was an interesting experience. The teachers provide help when asked for but Bard has so many geniuses on their team also means they have a lot of eccentric characters. While this creates a fun learning environment the abnormalities that come with this can make learning difficult sometimes. There is also a clear division in performance when it comes to how good the humanities classes are and how sometimes poor the STEM classes can be especially in the freshman and sophomore years. The sports are lacking with they're being few options besides main contenders like baseball track and basketball. Are resources for college application are amazing however and have been extremely helpful to my college application process. The safety of the school is almost guaranteed, I've seen one fight out of all my years here but the culture is almost too sensitive. Junior: Although this is a primarily white institution, over the years Eleanor Roosevelt has progressed and become more diverse, making sure that students of color feel accepted into the community. Senior: The curriculum is rigorous and well structured with a lot of emphasis and help from the entire administration. The PA is actively involved and sometimes funds some activities for both students and faculty. The IB Program is intense but has a lot of benefits including College readiness! The only short coming about the school is space because it is shared with other schools. However, plans are underway to get a separate school space in the neighborhood. We have been briefed that the concerned officials in DOE has approved some steps and a space has been identified that can accommodate the school and it’s close to public transportation along the L train and local buses. Some parents are organized and do car pooling and share the costs. It’s an amazing plan works very well. School time is great based on the busy schedules and traffic in the area. Senior: Beacon has been an incredible experience from the moment I enrolled as a freshman transfer! I've never been in a school where I felt so supported by both the staff and my peers, everyone here truly wants you to succeed. I will say, the cutthroat atmosphere when it comes to college season can be a bit rough, but generally speaking, the school handles the college process really well--there are just a lot of intelligent students who want to get to the best schools. Senior: I love my school so much: the community, the arts aspect, and the individuality it allows. I feel like I can absolutely be myself there. The teachers at LaGuardia are so welcoming and warm. The creativity is palpable when walking through the halls. My favorite part about my school would definitely be the plethora of shows each year across all the majors. I love seeing the Jazz ensemble, the opera and dance shows, etc. There's just so much to see! I also appreciate that during the summer, no matter your major, you're allowed to take classes in writing, acting, dance or directing. These summer workshops are extremely fun and allow you to stretch yourself while getting a taste for what other majors experience. It's hard to find what I don't like about LaGuardia, but if I had to, I would say the design of the building. I am a sucker for lighting, and LaGuardia halls are devoid of that. Middle School Student: Great school and great teachers. They teach you all the things you need to know at ur level. They have lower classes and higher classes. I’m a student that goes there and every quarter I get high honor roll. Teachers help you and support you in the all the ways they could. There is even extra support classes for students who need extra help during school time, and they’re all for free! Give kids a lot of freedom in school. Teacher also engage with students, they’re not only their teacher but also friends and role model. Teachers also joke around to make classes more fun and not as boring. Senior: Millennium Brooklyn, has been an amazing environment for me to grow while offering support, and encouragement to become independent. Millennium is a relatively small school (600-700 students), in a large building that is shared with 3 other schools. The small school environment allows students to form valuable connections with their teachers that last throughout their time at MBHS and even after graduation. The majority of the teacher at this school are deeply passionate about what they are teaching, which make their classes engaging. While I have had teachers I did not like, most of them are not only great educators, but incredible people who are passionate about watching students thrive, and exceed their own expectations. In my opinion, the biggest downside of MBHS is the lack of class choices, in 9th and 10th grade you can't choose your classes, and there are a limited number of AP's to choose from Junior and Senior year.... Senior: I am currently a senior at NYC ischool. I have enjoyed my high school year there. It is a small school, but honestly, it doesn't affect you meeting new people since you can choose your classes and all grade levels can be in those classes unless it is a required class for your grade. Mostly all the teachers are good and really do like the classes they teach since they create the class and its their curriculum. Our school doesn't believe in homework, students can only take 3 AP classes max senior or junior year and are not big on tests, or taking off points for late work. This can either be good or bad depending on you, but it doesn't affect your chances of getting into a good college. For example, in my school year, people have gotten into Columbia University, Barnard College, Middlebury College, University of Pennsylvania, Tulane University, Lafayette College, and many more good colleges ( it all depends on what you make of your high school years).
