Paradise lost for Johnny and Denise

This article is more than 19 years old

Johnny Vaughan and Denise van Outen's Saturday night entertainment show Passport to Paradise has been axed after disappointing ratings when it ran on BBC1 in the summer.

The BBC has confirmed that the programme, which was billed as having the potential to become a long-running Saturday night ratings banker before it launched in July, will not be returning for a second series.

"We loved the idea of Johnny and Denise working together, but in the end we decided we'd gone as far as we could with the format," a BBC spokesman said.

The idea behind Passport to Paradise was to try to recreate the on-screen chemistry Vaughan and van Outen shared when they presented Channel 4's Big Breakfast together.

However, Passport to Paradise got a lukewarm reception - with some reviewers commenting that the format seemed ill-thought out - and the ratings were disappointing.

The show launched with 4 million viewers and actually won its slot in early July, but by the end of its six-week run the audience had dipped to 2.7 million.

Both presenters have already moved on to other projects. Vaughan is concentrating most of his efforts on his Capital Radio breakfast show, but will also be returning to BBC TV to host a short run of his BBC Radio 5 Live sports talk show, Fighting Talk, on BBC2 from Friday.

He will also be returning to BBC1 next year for a second series of Superstars.

Van Outen will be appearing alongside Graham Norton in the BBC1 Christmas special, Celebrate the Sound of Music.
