Alexandria City High School Reviews
Rating 3.8 out of 5 1,111 reviews
ACHS has several great educational opportunities such as the Governor's Health Sciences Academy, STEM academy, various AP and dual enrollment classes, NHS, and the ONLY National Academy of Finance in the state of Virginia. Not to mention the Certificate Technical Education courses such as automotive technologies and cosmetology for students who do not see college as right for them and would rather enter the workforce immediately after they graduate high school. While there have always been so many opportunities at this school, it is significantly understaffed, especially in GHS,STEM and the international academy. With over 4,000 students in total between the three campuses that make up ACHS, safety, sanitation, finances and competence tend to challenge the staff and administration and add to the negative reputation that ACHS has as the only public high school in Alexandria.
Alexandria City High School has a diverse learning environment where students have the ability to take courses that challenge themselves in different ways. However, the teaching styles of some teachers should be evaluated to give students equal opportunities at being successful. Overall the school is a good place to discover potential career interests and after high school plans.
Overall, this school is okay. Students are offered a wide variety of courses of differing subjects and levels (including AP), so there's almost always a class related to the career you're interested in. I also appreciate the resources the school provides. There always seems to be events (at the college and career center) to help students plan their futures'. The staff to student ratio, however, isn't great (there are way too many students and not enough staff members). Because of this, classes can get very full, which makes it difficult to create strong relationships with teachers sometimes (and I've heard teachers complain that it's stressful to have so many students). Most of the teachers I've had at this school were very good. I've had some very passionate teachers that genuinely made me enjoy learning, but I've also had few teachers that don't necessarily care for students or know how to teach properly, making it extremely difficult to do well (even if its an easier class).
