A derelict, huddled under the steps of a missionary church, feels enlightened by the sermon of a passionate preacher and infatuated by the beauty of the congregation's pianist, in such a way that he tries to improve his life of poverty by becoming a policeman. His first assignment will be to patrol along Easy Street, the turf of a vicious bully and his criminal gang.

"Poverty and riches"
Riots in the streets, so The Tramp gets a job as a policeman and immediately almost kills a guy with a streetlight. Charlie knew it in 1917 and it's still true over a hundred years later: all cops are bastards. Solidarity with the rioters ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽
Hilarious, spellbinding and class warfare conscious, Chaplin's Easy Street is a 104 year old banger that shows Chaplin evolving from his strictly romantic pratfall shorts before this to something with a little emotional tension amidst the laughs and the swoons. This is some of his best performance work within his shorts and seems just as important in the 21st century in light of the still-tenuous relationship between police and the common man.
Chaplin replaces his cane for a truncheon and takes to the street as a bumbling beat-cop, what ensues is an expectedly hilarious flurry of absurd gags and science-defying prat-falls, if at times bogged down by the constraints of its 1917 release. Ever wanted to see a vertically challenged policeman take on a dozen attackers twice his size, running and fly-kicking them all to the ground in one fell-swoop? This is the film for you.
Once again, this is just a ridiculous amount of fun! Quite repetitive, but it gets the job done. All that needs to be said, another solid Chaplin short.
Easy Street is odd to watch in our current cultural climate saturated with fear of police brutality. Charlie Chaplin becomes a police officer (somewhat reluctantly—the scene of his indecision is easily the highlight of the film) and struggles to subdue a troublesome neighborhood. As it turns out, police violence is funny in a world where the police are afraid of the people and not the other way around.
Also, Chaplin saves the day on drugs. Potentially his best work under 30 minutes.
Cute little short That overstays its welcome. Nonetheless entertaining at times.

This is a bit like a Popeye cartoon, if you replace "eating spinach" with "accidentally injecting heroin into your butt".
It's basically my man Charlie "BADASS" Chaplin joining the police and fighting the Incredible Hulk, a mob of bums and a stalker of women while fighting hunger and bringing order to the city that was in chaos in one afternoon. WHAT A LEGEND!!!

My first Chaplin movie! Wow this movie is 101 years old and yet the message is still relevant to this day. We haven't really evolved that much as a society have we?
I'm gonna explore his filmography soon. This one is a good start.
