Complicated and nuanced as equally as it is populist and compelling, Takashi Yamazaki's The Eternal Zero is way too cluttered to assign any form of accurate assessment and yet, this highly thought-provoking tale on redemption and legacy is highly worthy of your time. Yamazaki effortlessly weaves together an engaging, expressive, sometimes exciting yet often horrifying depiction of a disgraced kamikaze pilot's life, never glorifying the nightmarish situation and always remaining sombre. The great performances sell the otherwise muddled script while its aerial combat is staggeringly realised with Yamazaki's creative use of visual effects and kinetic camerawork. More solemn and graceful, emotional and tragic, than downright high-octane and death-crazed as depicted in some Western war films, The Eternal Zero is an enormously evocative film even though it stumbles upon its final approach with an exceptionally jarring and sappy epilogue that feels very out of place with this otherwise excellent film.

FIlm ini tergolong ke dalam kategori anti-war karena penggambaran dampak buruk perang terhadap diri sendiri dan orang terdekat. Sekalipun itu adalah misi untuk membela tanah air, namun tetap yang namanya nyawa tidak boleh berakhir sia-sia. Melalui dialog-dialog antar tokoh, hal yang paling terlihat jelas adalah usaha untuk menyampaikan pesan berupa betapa pentingnya menghargai hidup karena hidupmu punya pengaruh terhadap kehidupan orang lain.

I admit it’s kinda hard for me to divorce this from the author of the book it’s based upon who is a genuinely awful person (a war crime denier, including the Rape of Nanking) but I do feel that director Yamazaki was able to craft a film from that source material that carries a strong anti-war/anti-the wartime philosophy of imperial Japan with strong performances from the cast.
The entire cast does a fantastic job, but for me the highlights were Junichi Okada and Haruma Miura (rest his soul, he left us far too soon). I loved the idea of the descendant of the pilot digging through the survivors of the war to hear the different perspectives, from those who scorned…

This movie sets the standard for what's considered epic. The cinematography was beyond beautiful and the acting is impeccable.

This film is difficult to give a star rating to, so I'll not. It tells the legend of a kamikaze pilot and can be summarized by the scene where the protagonist takes great offense to his friend referring to his grandfather as merely a suicide bomber during World War II. The film tells its story through flashbacks and narration from his grandfather's veteran peers. And basing it on the method alone, it does a fine job of creating intrigue and delivering the necessary action and emotion. Godzilla Minus One director Takashi Yamazaki helmed this film, which Studio Ghibli founder Hayao Miyazaki condemned for glorifying the actions of Japan's kamikaze pilots. Having seen it, this film strays away from their actions and criticizes the country's war tactics for leading to the deaths of competent soldiers, which some deem controversial. The film is engaging, but its intention will be up to you.

I hate that I enjoyed this movie as much as I did. It's so incredibly well made. I don't think it's among the best war movies, but Yamazaki is masterful at weaving together its compelling dramatic narrative, warts and all.
A lot of people tout this as extremist nationalist propaganda, but the messaging is far too muddled for me to feel like that's an accurate assessment. Part of pre-Minus One Yamazaki watch
Not as effectively critical of Imperial Japan as Farewell, Rabaul but still a great piece of humanization for kamikaze pilots while criticizing the system and ideology around them as well as examining how Japan itself has contextualized and forgotten its past.
Man, this one just oozes intense nationalism. A true Shinzo Abe-era film, it glorifies the ideals of imperialist Japan whilst pretending to condemn the war and its strategies. Other than that, its a fairly watchable movie, just one with more problems than successes.

說實在也不難看，我滿喜歡這種描寫戰爭眾生相的人性角度，以及拉開六十年對日本現況的反思的設計，還有關於世代理解和將故事傳承下去的積極意義。但這種虛構英雄的故事放在日本二戰的脈絡下怎麼也沒法說服我，連帶整個二戰場景的呈現也看不出編導有任何有意思的角度，更不用說整個調度都很平庸。最後結尾一而再再而三不明所以的轉折，帶到最後特攻那主角詭異的笑容，真是立馬再扣一顆星。說到底我認為這部片雖然強調尊重生命，對特攻戰術的批判和在軍國主義下為國捐軀的荒謬，但整個意識型態還是很有問題，在此不太想多說造口業，也許沉澱一陣子後會有不同的想法。

Yesterday I finished reading the book of this adaptation. The original name of both is The Eternal Zero.
The story focuses on the kamikaze pilots during World War II, from a Japanese perspective that presents a protagonist who is not shown as the heroic martyrs that the stereotypical kamizakes are portrayed as.
Both the book and the movie do not state that these men died in vain, but it does mention that the missions in which they were used were a desperate ploy that did not work for Japan when they were already losing the war.
