1. Ganon

First Appearance: The Legend of Zelda (1986)

The big baddie of the Zelda series, Ganon has been causing trouble in the kingdom of Hyrule since 1986. Despite his dark appearance and dark designs, ironically, the name Ganon is of Irish origin and means "fair-skinned," "white," and "blessed." It's unlikely that his name was chosen for those reasons, however—more likely because it just sounds cool.

The name is more commonly used as a surname and spelled with two n's rather than one, but Ganon, no matter how you spell it, makes for one badass moniker.

  • Ronan

Other Famous Ganons

2. Kass

First Appearance: Breath of the Wild (2017)

A member of the Rito tribe, Kass is one of the best parts of Breath of the Wild, popping up in various locations and singing riddle-like songs that point Link to different shrines throughout Hyrule. More commonly spelled Cass, the name is considered gender-neutral and is a shortened form of both Casper and Cassandra—meaning "treasure-bearer" and "shining upon man," respectively—but it also works as a standalone name reminiscent of this friendly, musical bird-man.

  • Kase/Kasey
  • Kason

Other Famous Kasses

  • Cass Elliot, the Mamas & the Papas
  • Cass Gilbert, American architect
  • Castiel ("Cas"), character in Supernatural

First Appearance: The Legend of Zelda (1986)

Hero of the series, the elf-like protagonist Link reincarnates in various iterations throughout time in order to defeat Ganon, or any other evil, and save Princess Zelda. For such a force to be reckoned with, it's an unusual name, albeit a charming one, and in our world, it's typically used as a nickname for Lincoln.

Shigeru Miyamoto, the creator of the series, stated in 2011 that he chose the name because "[Link] connects people together," referencing the Hylian's ability "to spread the scattered energy of the world through the ages."

  • Linn
  • Lock/Locke
  • Luke
  • Link Deas, character in To Kill a Mockingbird
  • Link Larkin, character in Hairspray
  • Link Wray, American musician/guitarist

4. Makar

First Appearance: The Wind Waker (2002)

In The Wind Waker, Makar is a Korok, a small wooden child of the forest, and he plays his violin for the Great Deku Tree. The name Makar (pronounced "muh-KAR," in my mind) isn't one you hear very often, and it seems to be much more commonly found in surnames. It's of Greek origin, meaning "blessed," "happy," or "fortunate."

Check out Makar's catchy song above, as well as his adorably pudgy roundness, to see how he lives up to his positive name.

  • Mack
  • Makai
  • Marco/Marcus
  • Micah/Mycah

Other Famous Makars

  • Nancy Hogshead-Makar, American swimmer
  • Cale Makar, Canadian hockey player
  • Scott Makar, American lawyer/judge

5. Sidon

First Appearance: Breath of the Wild (2017)

Prince Sidon—which is probably a pun on "Poseidon," the Greek god of the sea—is the endlessly positive prince of the Zoras, the aquatic race of fish people in the Legend of Zelda games. It would be pretty rare to see this cool, watery name out in the wild, and it's probably best known for being a major city in Lebanon. The name itself is of Hebrew origin, meaning "fishery," funnily enough.

  • Sidney
  • Silas/Sylas
  • Simon

Other Famous Sidons

  • Sidon, ancient city in Lebanon
  • Dorotheus of Sidon, Greek astrologer
  • Zeno of Sidon, Greek Epicurean philosopher

1. Agitha

First Appearance: Twilight Princess (2006)

Despite being, oddly, the self-proclaimed "Princess of Bugs," Agitha developed a cult following after her appearance in Twilight Princess, even earning a spot in the spinoff hack-and-slash game Hyrule Warriors (2014). At the very least, we can say the girl is dedicated to her work (despite having Link do most of it, which might just be part of her genius).

Agitha, usually spelled "Agatha," is a name of Greek origin, meaning "good" or "honorable." It's a classic, old-fashioned name fit for a princess—bugs or no bugs.

  • Adelaide
  • Agnes
  • Magdalene
  • Matilda
